My cooking-historian friends more consider it a thing that became popular in women's parties featuring spirits that were not legal at the time, because it added to the transgressiveness of the event... and was funny.

Related to the canned vs fresh conversation, I saw a cooking video over on Instagram where some lady was using canned black beans to make nacho dip in a kiddie pool and didn't drain or rinse them before pouring them in. I suppose if you're making food in kiddie pools, draining/rinsing is probably not high on the to-do list. Like, there are other problems. But still.
