If finding a non-OneD&D game is as hard as finding a non-5E game, then yeah…you either play the new hotness or you practically don’t play.

I know that this is a popular fear, but I can't find any evidence for it. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, or it couldn't happen...I'm just saying I never see it happen.

I still play BECM with my buddies from high school (thanks to the power of Roll20), and it hasn't been "the new hotness" for like 40 years. And my other, more regular gaming group cycles through Call of Cthulhu and 5th Edition D&D every year or so, and there's rumors of an Old Gods of Appalachia game in the works for this winter. The game tables at my local game store have a regular Pathfinder group that blocks off the same day of the week for months in advance. (shrug)

I do understand the FOMO thing, though...it's fun to talk about the different features, and to speculate on the direction the game might be heading in, and I wouldn't want to miss out on that banter. But some folks are taking it too far, insulting other people and showing their buttocks in public about the tiniest details. They're clearly not enjoying the conversation, they're making themselves miserable over it. It's pretty wild.

Which is incredibly amusing when people say the intent is just to clean up the rules a bit to make it easier for new players and not create a surge in book sales. WotC knows exactly what they're doing here.

Given the number of published adventure paths I think that I could conceivably play Pathfinder 1e for the rest of my life.

And you certainly don't need to win over some arbitrary number of strangers on the internet to agree with you.

But if I do, and I do it enough times then thanks to the 'we have no guiding principles of design we just listen to the majority' depth of the Wizards team's design convictions, I could have D&D go back to what I want!

I spent 10 years running/playing them. Still have 5-6 of them left. Takes me about 2 years to complete one playing bi-weekly. There is a lot of adventure there.

There are still a fair number of folks kicking around Star Wars: The Old Republic, although it's one of those things where you have to be on at the right time of day. The Galactic Trade Network, where you sell all your items to other folks, however, is beyond ridiculous at this point - really stupid stuff is going for double-digit millions of credits...

Every time I feel like rejoining SWTOR, I look at how many expansions I've missed and apparently how the plot line makes huge jumps back and forth, and it doesn't seem worth starting over again.

I did love the heck out of my Sith Juggernaut in the vanilla version of the game, though. A pure villain with no self-doubt about it.

Are you speaking as a player or as a DM?

Because while I have players who are devoted to playing D&D, I can also get many of them to show up when I say "hey, I'd like to try this other game out for a one shot. If it's great, we might play more games in future."

As a referee and player, my cup runneth over with 5E games. If I want to run anything else, there’s a good chance I might be able to round up 3-4 half-hearted players for a one shot who complain about not playing 5E. As a player…forget it.
