The study also debunked this urban legend. They put a set of GPS trackers in garbage cans all over campus, and put a different set of GPS trackers into recycling bins. None of the GPS trackers got mixed up: the garbage ones went to the landfill, and the recycling ones went to the processing center.

I'll see if I can find a copy of it.

I guess this also depends on what country you're in. Turkey is notorious for not recycling a lot... And we're actually getting first world countries to send their garbage to us. Yaaay.

Oh absolutely. And I imagine it varies even by city here in the USA. This study was done here in Portland, Oregon...a city that prides itself on it's "green" image, and passes lots of environmental protection/reform policies. I imagine that study would have gotten very different results in, say, Stillwater Oklahoma.

Americans can be very bad tourists.

Tourists from anywhere can be very bad tourists. I used to commute through Washington, D.C., on the subway. "Touron Season" was a genuine thing.

Almost 100% of the recycling on the college campus becomes contaminated with trash and needs to be throw in with the trash. Yet, if we do not offer recycling the same students that contaminate the recycling are up in arms (or whatever serves as arms these days).

This sounds all too familiar. On my campus we have recycle bins and garbage cans almost literally every 50 feet and yet students will simply get up and walk away from where they've been sitting, outside, leaving whatever trash they had behind. We must recycle, but it's not their job to do it.

Metal is the only thing that really gets recycled. The rest is trash.

Glass and some kinds of paper can be, but the latter is selective, and comparatively little glass is used as trash compared to what once was. Plastic, unfortunately, is currently pretty intractable.

We recycle ourselves now. Metal, specifically aluminum, is easy. Everything else is suspect.

It is, admittedly, the low-hanging fruit, both in value and ease to recycle.
