I guess I never understood the need to fudge my dice rolls. As a DM, I enjoy being surprised by the dice...I too am curious about what monsters are going to show up while the party is trying to finish a long rest, and I am also looking forward to seeing how the battle turns out. My adventures are about 10% script and 90% random generation tables.
And as a player, I think some of the most fun and memorable moments happen when I roll badly. The trick is to learn how to "fail forward," and to not be afraid to narrate something humorous or dramatic when (not if) I fail.
