That's pretty horrific. I've had sessions where I was rolling so badly I started reaching for actions that didn't require rolls ... 🤣
That particular session became legendary, in that group. At the end of the fight the GM declared that my shield was reduced to two small pieces of wood that were vaguely attached by a couple of straps. Burned multiple Possibility cards and several personal possibilities to reduce damage, along the way, but learned that it's always better to just burn one Possibility to create a "Reality Bubble" at the start of a tough fight, to avoid that mess in future. "Active Defence" was the key, because you can never get a bonus of less than 1 and my Dodge number was ungodly ;)

I guess I never understood the need to fudge my dice rolls. As a DM, I enjoy being surprised by the dice...I too am curious about what monsters are going to show up while the party is trying to finish a long rest, and I am also looking forward to seeing how the battle turns out. My adventures are about 10% script and 90% random generation tables.

And as a player, I think some of the most fun and memorable moments happen when I roll badly. The trick is to learn how to "fail forward," and to not be afraid to narrate something humorous or dramatic when (not if) I fail.

Some gamers just want to win. They’re not interested in any sense of randomness or fairness. We have 1-2 players like that at our ling-running D&D table. Power gamer, optimizer, dice cheat. Also the person who throws the controller when losing at a video game. And blames the controller when they lose. I don’t get it. Why play if you can’t stand to lose?

I don't get why you keep the dice cheating controller throwing players at the table. But I admire your ability to do so and keep them as friends (I assume).
