On the other hand, there's a tendency to automatically see any reply as being a correction or disagreement. I've had someone try to argue with me when I was quoting them to agree with their point and provide extra context in support of it.

Yeah, let's just say that some people on the boards don't seem to have much experience with being agreed with.

I do at least feel a little sympathy as, if you consider all of the adversarial threads, they're sort of conditioned into a negative response as a knee-jerk reaction.

I think more broadly that people are just used to arguing--and being argued with--on the Internet. It's not just here, in other words.

Before hitting Post I usually try to consider if what I'm committing to forever is something I'd be comfortable saying to someone's face, where it could result in them feeding me my teeth

These boards are vastly more moderated than any social media platform, which actually limits how crazy things can get here.

If something like 80% of the posts you make are a condescending correction (or, quite often, "correction") to something someone else said, you're not making things better for anyone.
