You know, there are certain things in life that I don't dislike, but I find that the more I am exposed to the fans of it ...

Welp, I can't help but dislike it.
I understand the sentiment, though I think it’s exacerbated to that point by fans of any item trying to convince people that personal taste and preference should be taken as though opinion carries the same weight as physical laws.

I run into this a lot from both sides of some things, the fans and the detractors, and it becomes almost a religious argument instead of people just going, “Different strokes, if you change your mind, let me know.”

It gets really difficult to avoid painting all fans or detractors with the same paint brush, too.

I fall into both sides of this at time, and have to take a step back and focus on other things. Helps maintain a healthy dispassion for what is, essentially, a luxury for me.

I love Undertale, but cannot recommend anyone spend too much time online looking up information about the videogame, or you'll run into the fans and the anti-fans, both of whom are pretty bad. (The game itself is great, though.)

Its gotten to a point where pretty much any media I want to consume, I just have to pretend other people dont exist and have opinions on it.

Its not great.

Literally not even about this site. Incoherent rant incoming:

It's all hollow words until you actually do something about it. Yes, reposting a "no more bigotry" message from three years ago that you and your mod staff never acted on is just hollow words. You still have the same posters posting the same bigotry for the last three+ years, only now they're bolder because they've been ignored by your mod staff this whole time. If you want the few remaining marginalized people on your site to stay you have to actually act, actually ban people spewing hate speech. What you permit you promote. There is no neutral ground. Either you're actively helping make things better or your actions and inaction are making things worse. You want the accolades from appearing to do good but refuse to actually step up and do any good.

I wish I didn’t have a list of both fluff I find fun and works that speak to me deeply that I basically can’t post about because I know they’ll draw arguments that stress me out and make my depression worse, which makes my physical disabilities worse. Very little out there is worth actual pain and incapacity to me.

Very occasionally something slides into less toxic public discourse. Not often, though. So there’s stuff I can only talk about with 1-2 people total.

They clearly have never heard of The Paradox of Tolerance.

They clearly have never heard of The Paradox of Tolerance.
It's a paradox only in that it's framed poorly. Like Zeno's Paradox of Motion.

But those who would abuse it try to force it as immutable law, rather than as a social contract, and those you mention in your post are either duped into accepting that, or are complicit. "If you say that you are open to other viewpoints then you must be open to all. Even those that shut out other views. Are you a hypocrite?"

Let me explain your misunderstanding of your own experiences to you in fourteen walls of text.

I'm not sure bad faith actors acting in bad faith points to a problem with tolerance.
