D&D 5E The Mainstreaming of D&D

It does sound like a hipster complaint
"DnD is too mainstream now. I liked it better when it was an indie scene"

Think I prefer DnD as it is, with the hobby booming rather than slowly dying out

For me, this is pretty much the last word on the matter. Other people are enjoying something I like, that's a good thing.

Not to mention, that communities populated by younger gamers are so much fun to hang out in. If you get out from under the shadow of the bittervets, it can really be a revelation.

Going off in left field here. I know that I have lamented for the vibe I got from the game in the past as well. But even using the rules we used then doesn't bring it back. Self-reflection made me come to the conclusion that it wasn't necessarily the vibe, exclusiveness, or gameplay of that time that I'm mourning. It's the loss of my youth. I started playing in 1991, and through the high school years with the same group of 7 of us during the developmentally volatile time known as adolescence. A strong bond was created between us as friends, our musical tastes, and our game. That raw teenage emotion that gripped us back then apparently doesn't come back. We still get together every once in awhile, play games, and have fun. But the game will never be the same as it was then. And to me, that's okay. I still love playing 2e AD&D and still play it. I also highly enjoy playing 5e as well. And sure, sometimes some of the changes they made do grind on me a bit (like apparently Lord Soth's trip into Ravenloft no longer happened), but that's what is great about the DIY aspect of D&D that I still enjoy.

I wouldn't expect any particular WotC release to be especially different than any we have seen thus far. Meaning that a Planescape book would probably be on par with Van Richten's: that is to say, pretty cool full of interesting ideas that still manages to paint within the lines and maintain a broad appeal.
My issue, minor as not is since I can correct it, is that with every release it seems 'we stray further from the light' and the feel of the earlier 5e releases is being lost.

I don't care for the direction in a number of ways, and eventually it won't be what I expect from D&D.

So give me Planescape really soon, before they forget what they used to now to provide. :D

Standard reminder that the DMG does not mandate 6-8 encounters if you read it for yourself rather than going on hearsay.
Right, it's the max that the PCs can handle, and the game works fine if the players are not pushed to their limit. But boy is it fun when they are, and this whole conversation is in regards to whether 5E cam be deadly: yes, it can, if the players are put in deadly situations that push their limits.

The one that gets my goat is the windows phone. The one I had was the best smart phone I’ve ever had. Outside of phones the one that annoys me the most is the Zune. IMO It was the vastly superior music device but Apple just crushed the market with a slick looking mediocre piece of technology.
My nephew had one, he loved it. But the anybody but Microsoft vibe runs deep along with Apple's pedestal.
