The Mandalorian & Grogu Trailer

You can definitely see the bigger budget is paying off.

That said, that title is dreadful. All the fun fonts can't disguise that this title isn't anything like the classic space serials of old. A bunch of people making six figures should have been able to come up with something better than "ugh, fine, just make it be their names and be done with it."

And given that the show was pretty shaky in its last season especially, I would really like to see more dialogue, etc. The clips they show in the trailer are fun -- Sigourney Weaver has the right level of gravitas and humor, for instance, after decades of dealing with aliens -- but one could boil down season three of the Mandalorian or the Book of Boba Fett into a really fun trailer like this as well, disguising the big flaws of each.

But I would really love for this to be amazing and fun, like the trailer makes it look like, rather than getting lost in the continuity sauce like so many Star Wars shows have done.

(And probably the biggest thing they could do to help this film would be to have Jimmy Kimmel pop up at the end of the trailer, announcing he'll be back on TV tonight.)

I wonder how much the ratings will suffer with people cancelling their D+ subscriptions. I mean, the demographic of people who would support Disney for capitulating to an FCC threat have for years been saying how they won't watch "woke" Star Wars, and now the demographic who would prefer the more inclusive Star Wars is cancelling because of Disney's capitulation to the FCC.

I like the AT-AT's crossing the mountain pass, but this trailer could easily be a collection of scenes from a new season of The Mandalorian.
See the the AT-AT scene just made me think "why is there an AT-AT sized trail up a mountain?" and "well having one fall off like that is pretty obviously the the main reason you wouldn't try to take AT-ATs up a mountain even if you had such a trail" (the other reason being that they could not turn around no matter what happened). Which really is just a sign that I've lost trust with this franchise to consistently provide me enough sliver of an explantion that I can turn my brain off and just enjoy cool stuff looking cool.

Well, "just main character's name" is more in line with old serials than I think you're giving it credit for. The problem is that "Grogu" is not a pulpy main character name that reads well for a title like Buck Rodgers, Flash Gordon, or Luke Skywalker. Neither is Din Djarin for that matter, but they didn't open that can of worms.

Obviously they want "Mandalorian" in the title so people casually familiar with the show know this is a movie for it, but want it different enough that it doesn't cause confusion about what people are talking about. Personally, having not seen it of course, I'd have probably gone with "Star Wars: The Mandalorians", since there will definitely be more than one Mandalorian in it (and the last season of the show really became as much the story of a Mandalorian tribe as of the Mandalorian), and since whether or not Grogu becomes a Mandalorian will definitely be a major character point. Alternatively I'd go with "Way of the Mandalorian" as that both alludes to their catch phrase and makes it sound like an old martial arts movie, it's own form of pulpy goodness.

I was under the impression that a trailer was supposed to give you an idea as to what the movie is about. This tells me nothing, except the the titular characters are 1) in it, and 2) do stuff. That's not enough to make me excited for this movie at all, not that I expected to be; Star Wars has been a dead franchise to me for a while now, and nothing in this trailer is sufficient to change my attitude toward the brand.
