The mandalorian [Spoilers]

I honestly would love to rewrite this episode. As others have commented, at the end of the episode the characters are exactly where they were at the start of the episode. The only character development we got was Mayfield getting a small arc, and Mando taking off his helmet in a contrived way. Without completely rewriting everything, I would have probably chosen to make the imperial base some sort of strategic relay station that receives orders from command ships and relays them to other ships in the fleet. I would have also woven some background info on Moff Gideon into the episode, to set him up for the finale, cause we know very little about him. Everything seems to go according to plan, until the rebels on the planet get involved and launch an all out attack on the base. Mando and Mayfield are captured, as they are believed to be imperials, and the rebels eventually become allies after Mando chooses to take off his helmet to gain their trust. Not overly complex or different, but it brings all the elements better together.

What is the point of facial scanning, if it doesn't also use facial identification? It seems like the writers were bending backwards trying to come up with a reason for Mando to take his helmet off.
I just assumed that taking the helmet off was the secondary reason and that giving the bad guys a scan of Din Djarin's face to use against him at an appropriate point later in the story was the primary reason. Because even though the base was blown up, you just know that scan is coming back to bite Mando.

It is possible, though so far the writers have been pretty terrible at setting such things up and having them come full circle later on. A lot of things often don't have a pay off.

It's only been two short-ish seasons, and they've had loads of things come back around already. The bounty hunter droid, Boba Fett, Mayfield, all sorts of things have been set up in earlier episodes that have paid off later.

Jon Favreau does much of the writing. Clearly he is incompetent and they should fire him because you think it’s terrible.

OR

He is highly acclaimed, is getting credit for saving the Star Wars universe after the heavily criticized movies, a very good writer, and you’re just mistaken about your assumptions.

One of those things...

This I mean how dare they use popular characters like Ahsoka, Thrawn, Fett well.

Complete failure to subvert my expectations!!!!
