1 level of Death Cleric isn't bad. You can double Toll The Dead with the Maverick bonus. Or you combine Find Steed and Primal Savegry.

Neither are the most impressive thing, but fun regardless.

So, I think that there is a fair point to be made that early on there isn't a lot that the Maverick could do that you couldn't build a specific class to do, and do more.

But, there are a few intriguing ideas, and one thing that might be insanely powerful.

Breakthrough spells count as Artificer spells, which means they are valid choices for your 11th level Spell-Storing Item. This allows for a spell to be cast up to ten times for free. Generally, I would but in Cure Wounds. But, the maverick opens this up to any 1st or 2nd level spells.

Go Cleric and give your allies the ability to cast Hold Person, Prayer of Healing, Spiritual Weapon, or Warding Bond (That could be fun, let the Fighter and Paladin share a warding bond, for no spell slot)

Go Druid and get Moonbeam, Flaming Sphere, Pass Without Trace, or Spike Growth.

Oh, and these are seconds, we can go firsts and get Faerie Fire, Bless, Thunderwave, or Inflict Wounds

At 9th level you also get the ability to cast the spell two levels higher than the slot you use. So, go Warlock and Cast Armor of Agathys as a third level, bumping it to an 5th. That can be quite nice on someone with the armor and health of an Artificer. Or going Cleric you could cast the Mass Healing Word and get a bigger boost out of it.

None of this is gamebreaking, but it allows for a caster who can cover multiple roles very easily. You could build a caster who takes all of the best terrain and debuffing spells in the game (up to fifth level) or all of the best buff spells (up to fifth level)

Yeah the subclass really picks up at 9th level. Is that an issue? Eh, sometimes different power curves for subclasses are fine. You're not too far behind on spell slots until then (3rd vs. 5th starts to get noticeable), and if you're playing Maverick you've already accepted that DPR isn't your main metric.

It's only fine if the campaign doesn't stop abruptly when your Maverick reaches the 4th level or something.

Artificers get a good selection of spells to load into their spell storing item anyway. I don't think there are any 2nd level spells on other class lists that are so earth-shatteringly good to be worth giving up a robo-dog for.

For example, Faerie Fire is already an Artificer spell.

Pass without a Trace?
Healing Spirit?
Spiritual Weapon (Which does similiar damage to a robo-dog even if it lacks other features)
Flame Blade (for giving to other people)

We might also soon get some level 2 summoning spells, which could be useful in Tasha's.

Again, maybe not worth a full companion.... but maybe they are too. Especially since the Maverick doesn't get one of these, but gets all of them. I mean, they get to choose 4 spell lists, which can end up covering the majority of spells in the game. Which is massive in terms of flexibility.

More on jack of all trades...

a PC who is truly a jack of all trades is never as good at any of them as a specialized character... but they can get involved and help with any endeavor.

Doing a group stealth check and the jack of all trade has a decent dex and proficiency in stealth? That will help

Doing healing but the cleric is down - or just helping the cleric so they can keep spell slots for utility and encounters? That will help

Doing research and the wizard just flubbed their knowledge arcana? You could help.

etc etc etc.

The ability to always be able to contribute is pretty potent IMO.
