OK. So, I'll take the burden of proof that 5e caters to videogamey overpowered munchkin builds.

A GM who understands the mechanics of the game should have a very good idea of how strong a monster is.
I've seen several D&D YouTuber types express issues with using CR.
Meanwhile I don't want to read through hundreds of options to find something that's in the ballpark.

CR isn't perfect but it's working for me and the DMs I've discussed with in person.

You can’t prove your opinion is a fact with someone else’s opinion as evidence.

Okay. Shrug.
you can obviously disagree on the particular case, but the point is that people can disagree about how reasonable something is, so the ‘most certainly’ is just your opinion, not more

I don’t think there is much that is ‘most certainly true’ at all, it is all just personal preference

Why are the only options:
  • GM is always right
  • The loudest jerk wins

Why? You have just pushed the exact thing I mentioned earlier. The players cannot be trusted. The GM must be trusted.
3.5.

I had sessions where people would spend an hour or more arguing over rules, the grid, etc.

Someone has to make the call in the moment. Discussion and consensus can happen after the session or offline.

You may disagree but I get to game maybe 6 hours a month so I do not want a lot of that time eaten with arguments.

Another reason: Most players barely understand their own characters much less the rules of the game.

If there needs to be a discussion, then I’ll have one but 99% of the time, rules arguments revolve around a player interpretation of the rules. It’s fine but can be exhausting if you let it dominate the session.

Am I always right in the moment? No. I always tend to err on player friendly decisions although I have one friend who constantly tries to break the rules because he finds it fun to push boundaries and you know when it is about to happen when he starts chuckling.
