I've been called a troll a couple of times, by the same person in fact. Mainly because the guy didn't like what I was posting and assumed I was a troll.

I think some people assume you're a troll if you start posting things they disagree with. If it's inflammatory to them, it must be inflammatory to everyone so you must be a troll.

I was accused of trolling on livejournal once, when I asked why everyone in Richmond was so unfriendly. That was a pretty nice little flamewar.

Anyway, i myself use the word because I saw others use it likewise, so thought it had to be the appropriate term...

Oh, it's an appropriate term at the right times. For Instance if der_kluge asked his Richmond question on a board that was pretty much pro-Richmond he could be called a troll. May not be and may be he just wanted to know why everyone he'd met were rude to him, but the way it was put could be considered just a troll to start a flamewar.

Why "Troll"?

There are a couple of threads on here talking about "trolls" on message boards. That got me thinking: Why troll? Why is the word troll used to describe someone on a message board that is being purposefully inflammatory? Anyone know the history of the word as it pertains to message boards?

Easy: you flame them well, yet they are back there replying their insults. Meaning they must be regenerating in the meantime.
