The Stuff of Dreams (Orsal Judging)

Devlin, reassured by Ryland's presence outside, goes over all aspects of Kamdar's room looking for anything that might give the investigator an idea of what may be happening in this case.
Kamdar and Jobe seemed to have taken most of their posessions with them, at least those which could easily be carried on their backs. Of what was left, Devlin quickly determined that Kamdar had a taste for expensive clothing and also for exotic poisons, although nothing incrminating had been left lying around, not even the raw ingredients for whatever the half-orc had used to alter Devlin's drink earlier that day.

There was one very significant thing that Devlin was able to find in the room. It was almost too easy to find.

There, on the side table where Kamdar had discarded it, was the crumbled-up note that Jobe had handed him just before Devlin's mind had clouded over. Devlin unfolded it, saw that it had much writing on it, then quickly finished his search. The pair then retired to Devlin's room to peruse the thing at length.

It turned out to not be a note at all, but some kind of broadsheet or notice. At the top of the page was the title:

"Port of Orussus"
"Harbor Watch"
"Register of Ship Sightings"

Under that, it bore the day's date.

The body of the document was divided into two sections, then each divided into three again. The top had a "List of Ships Sighted Approaching the Port", and the bottom was a "List of Ships Sighted Departing the Port". The left most column contained "Ships Rounding the Lizard", the center "Ships Approaching from the Horizon" (much shorter), and the last (and longest) was "Ships Rounding the Eagle's Nest". The bottom section was identical, only listing ships departing on those three headings, instead of approaching.

What immediately caught both Devlin and Ryland's eye was the fact that one of the entries in the "Ships Rounding the Eagle's Nest" column near the top of the page was circled, they guessed by Jobe. It read, "The Flying Lion - due Today".

"We better get to that ship", Ryland says. "We might have to be sneaky as late as we'll be arriving to the party.

"I agree. If they did grab Brigit, that might be where they're keeping her." Devlin readies his gear for a late-night visit to the docks.

Ryland and Devlin made their way to the harbor. An unusual glow seemed to be coming from that part of town, reflected by the overcast sky. As they drew closer, it was apparent that something was burning, despite the warm drizzling rain. It was not surprising that they encountered the city fire brigade; what was surprising was that instead of burning building, they were trying to contain the fire of a blazing ship.

"By the Gods, how can anything burn in this weather!", cried a member of the fire brigade as he drew a string of buckets dripping from the harbor. "Yesterday, it was that warehouse, today a cursed ship! What next, is a cistern going to catch on fire?"

"Just hurry up with those buckets!", yelled one of his comrades. As fast as they could, three men rushed the buckets to the ship, while another man threw a string of buckets to the first.

The burning ship seemed a lost cause, as it seemed likely to burn all the way to the waterline. Every now and then a string of buckets didn't make it to the burning ship, as they were needed to quench some line or rigging on one of it's neighbors. At least the fire watch had sense enough to contain the blaze, even if there was little hope of putting it out.

A dock officer with a long face ambled by. Seeing the pair, he shook his head sadly. "Rain from above, the sea below", he observed. "What most lubbers don't realize is that everything in between is dry as a twig, 'else they'd never float." He addressed the pair more directly. "A fine night for a walk, isn't it? A fine night indeed." He spoke words of irony, his tone not lost on the man and gnome.

OoC: Ryland is at 9/10.

"We're screwed.", Ryland dryly says to Devlin.

"Would you be able to tell us which ship that is?" Devlin asks indicating the burning husk in the water.
The dock officer glanced at the burning hulk. "That be the Flying Lion, fresh out of Monemvassia", he replied. "It's the queerest thing...there was nobody on board. Usually a ship comes in, and the passengers leave and the crew runs off for shore leave, and this one was no different. But nobody stayed aboard to direct the stevedores...when the fire watch got here, they found her abandoned, not even her Captain onboard to rescue from the flames."

"Not quite yet," Devlin says. "There's one other thing I want to check out here."

Devlin makes his way to the bucket brigade. "Excuse me. Did I hear one of you mention that a warehouse burned yesterday? Could you tell me about it please?"

The fire-quencher scowled at Devlin's suggestion. Couldn't the fool see that he was working feverishly to keep the whole harbor from going up? But as his eyes locked on the young man, Devlin's natural charm came through. "Meet me when I'm done here, we'll talk.

Fully another hour passed until the fire seemed safely out, and the buckets were stored on a wagon seemingly made for the purpose of ferrying them to fires. The sooty and sweating man approached the pair, suggested that he could use an ale, and led them to a nearby tavern where they could purchase it for him. There, he regaled him with the story of how several brave adventurers helped the fire brigade deal with a terrifying fire in a coal warehouse.

OoC: Nearly midnight now. Ryland at full HP.
