The Stuff of Dreams (Orsal Judging)

When the pair returned to the office, they found the door locked. After giving Ryland a look, Devlin gave Eppy's special knock, which elicited a "Thank the stars it's you", followed by the sound of the latch opening. Eppy beckoned them in, and they noted with some relief that the late Captain Jacobin was no longer present.

"They came and got him", she explained. "But you better watch your step. Officer Vagan is looking for you, and he didn't seem happy."
"Eppy, what did he say? he doesn't think we're involved, Right? Did anyone else visit?"

"Nobody else was here", replied the secretary. "And I think he does think you had something to do with it, but he didn't say much. Something about a 'coincidence', but he didn't say it like he believed there was a coincidence. I told him the truth...that you weren't here when that man staggered in and died, but he asked me over and over like he didn't believe my story. I got the feeling that if I made one little slip, I'd be in the City Jail and there'd be posters with your drawing on them all over town."

Devlin takes in the news with a serious look on his face. "Thank you Eppy, you did the right thing. Are you going to stay here at the office or will you feel safer at home?"

After waiting for Eppy's response, Ryland says to Devlin, "Well, you're the brains of this outfit. The way I see it we have two options. One, we arrange a meeting to sell the orb to Fatwon. Two, we look for Brigit first, then arrange the sale. That takes care of the orb. Now the killer. Noone else has stepped forward as a candidate for Archer's killer. So that leaves us with Fatwon, Jobe, and Brigit. How are we going to prove it?"

Eppy decided that so long as she kept the door locked, she should be able to take care of herself at the office. Besides, she reasoned, the "replacements" might need her help before this was all through, and she could help them better at the office.

Devlin nods in acceptance of Eppy's plan to stay at the office. "Be careful, Eppy. We'll try to check in later. Come on, Ryland, time to head back to the Tower Inn."

Devlin and Ryland made their way from Archer's offices to the Tower Inn. Less than a block from the entrance, a frightened, feminine voice called to them from an alleyway: "Devlin! Ryland! Oh, thank the gods, you're here. Please help me!" A quivering Brigit, wrapped in a hooded cloak which she clutched to her bosom, stepped forth. She looked as if she hadn't slept a wink in days, and was clutching at straws to keep from drowning.

Devlin hurries into the alley. "Brigit, where have you been? We've been looking for you for two days now."
"They had me", the pretty but disheveled brunette answered breathlessly. "I got away this morning, and I've been hiding here ever since. I was afraid to go anywhere, afraid to go back...oh, but now I have you. Promise you'll protect me, and I'll go anywhere with you."

Devlin puts his arm around the woman. "Calm down, Brigit. Take a deep breath and let's start from the beginning. Who had you? And when did they get you?"
