Spoiler thread for the new show which starts this evening at 9pm on BBC1/iPlayer (and I assume Disney+ for international folks).

It’s got decent reviews so far. Two episodes tonight and then one a week. 5 total, I believe.

No date has been set for Disney+ release from what I can see. Just "sometime in 2026." Since I don't have Disney+ at the moment, that is fine by me.

It’s Arrival, but wet. At least so far.

Russell Tovey is channelling Shaggy from Scooby Doo. I’m waiting for him to say “Yoinks!”

So strange. From what I’m hearing Disney bankrolled this but who knows when it’s coming to the states and advertising is zilch!
This is why Disney is losing to Netflix. Netflix has a section called coming soon where basically you can track upcoming shows. For this show which appears to be mixed reviews with a significant budget I have to put a reminder in for myself
This has so much wasted potential!!! With a solid direction and good advertising you could create a tv event with this show. Maybe not stranger things event but something but instead it’s incompetence on a new level
Now I’m hearing just you wait where we take the new dr when she/he/they come back . It will be better this time. This is cats in the cradle b-bleep

The end of ep2 where the sea folk ‘return’ all the junk to the land was pretty cool. I don’t know how realistic in terms of worldwide coverage/volume that was but it was a lot of junk! Like, a few feet deep coverage of non-water ground across the world. Not sure what tech they were using to do it. It was fun to see The Titanic’s remains dumped in the middle of the city.

So they demand that land dwellers stay on the land, including airspace over the sea. Clearly that’s not going to be doable. There’s only 3 more episodes so I don’t know how much of a ‘war’ they’ll have time to depict.

Couple of drop-in references to The Doctor… who is not there to help this time though!

I’m definitely looking go forward to next Sunday’s episode.

The Sea Devils launched a worldwide terrorist attack, keep trying to make power moves during negotiations even when they're obviously counterproductive, and their demands are so obviously unreasonable that combined with their previous actions it'd be safest to assume they're just trying to create casus belli through provocation and have no interest in peace.

They're entirely correct that diplomacy involves a lot of empty words and wasted time. The alternative is war, which it seems like they've chosen to start.

My main (and pretty much only major) complaint is the lack of subtext other than the 'Elites' eating caviar.

It's a definite improvement in quality.

Yeah, UNIT pretty much pointed that out. The sea devils (homo aqua as they're called in the show) seem not to care.

What's the Sea Devils' deal - are they basically Silurians who live in the ocean rather than hibernating in various locations?

Seems like there's at least 3 different species we've seen so far. They apparently have high technology, but they hibernate for millenia.

How many roles has Russell Tovey had in the Whoverse now? Maybe he just has one of those faces.

He was in the Xmas one with Kylie Minogue on the space Titanic.

Yes, although they also went into hibernation at the same time as the silurians (also not their proper name) to survive the same catastrophe, and their revival procedures failed until human tech activated them.* I’m surprised the show didn’t make this clear, but the BBC has put out an edited version of The Sea Devils, which I imagine you are expected to watch in order to catch up with the lore.

*Per the novelisation, the was the arrival of the Moon, which went into orbit rather than pass by, which was the revival trigger.

We watched the new re-edited version of The Sea Devils on iPlayer just before this, but really struggled with it. It's aged so badly. No amount of editing can save those 70s production values, terrible choreography, and plodding men in rubber suits falling over.
