D&D 5E Thoughts on a future product

I know that the rules are not even out yet, however there has been a burning question going through my mind for months. How will 5e handle levels above 20th level. I have been a fan of epic level campaigns for years, and know it is not everyone's cup of tea.

The Tyranny of Dragons campaign has me really excited, stop the rise of Tiamat. Even if Tiamat does not appear in the campaign, it is the epic scale of the adventure that is exciting for me and can't wait to run it.

With 0e and 1e there were rules that worked well with this type of game. 3e had them but the 3e epic rulebook had a completely different system than the previous 20 levels due to, i believe the math did not work right. I thought it was ok, but did not enjoy how it felt compared to previous editions.

With what I have read and have seen, it seems that 5e will handle levels above 20 well, only time will tell.

I believe at 1 time there was stats for Asmodeous and others of that ilk. What were they like.

They were o.k., but probably not as good as a 20th level PC would be. Most of the play test monsters where pretty underpowered while they were working on the maths.

However, Given that Ogres almost doubled in hit points, it may well be that Asmodeous ends up in the 30-40 Hit Die range.

I think we'll see Epic level rules at some point. And, just like with psionics, I think there will be a public playtest of the rules before we get them.

Thaumaturge.

I hope its less "Epic Level Handbook" and more "Mythic Adventures". At that point in a characters adventure I think all upgrades should be story based and less "grind" even if that grind is Dragons, Demons, and gods.

I don't think they're going to do that much public playtesting anymore. The public playtest was mostly to get reactions from as many players as possible as they developed and honed the game to make sure it fit the "feel" that people wanted. They'll probably do wider playtests than they've done in the past, but I'm not all that sure we'll see another public one unless they do a large overhaul (d20 Modern or something like that).

This. I have no interest in trying to progress past 20, and if a campaign I was running got that far, characters definitely would not just level up to 21 for another +1 to hit or whatever.

By level 20 I'm imagining rewards along the lines of magic items and artifacts, lands, titles, castles and keeps, minions, followers, soldiers, maybe the princess' hand in marriage. (Of course those things can also be a lot of fun way before 20!)

We know from this L&L they plan on doing more public playtests.

If we know something is an issue, we’ll let you know that we plan to address it. When we have some ideas, we’ll put those in front of the community and playtest them before making any changes. If a change is well liked and solves problems, we’ll implement it as an option for DMs to use.

And Mearls has mentioned before they want to use public playtesting more. He's very satisfied with the results. I didn't, in my 2 minutes of looking, find the link. Maybe someone else has it.

Yeah, forgot that L&L. I just didn't want to assume too soon that's what they're doing without a statement, but between the column, the comments, and spending more time on the boards on top of editing this beast of an episode for Gamer's Tavern, I forgot all about that.

I confirmed via twitter that Tiamat can be fought in Tyranny of Dragons.
