Throwing vs. Archery

Which is better, throwing weapons or bows/xbows/slings?

The sling they simply shafted. Yet another slap in the halfling's face.

OGL stuff, but...

MGP has something called an "ironbreaker". Consists of a large hook or scoop attached to the arm that accelerates a large 'oversized sling bullet' (read big metal ball:) ) as its thrown. I think there's a professional sport based on the same idea.

Medium version is 1d10 + Str. So for the halfling it drops to 1d8 + Str. I believe that the range was 100, but I'm not sure.

My halflings have a new toy... :]

Yup. Jai Alai. There was also a scoop-em type children's beach toy in the late 70s (with rip-offs thereafter.)

And if the damage seems a bit high, this may be why: (Googled 'Jai Alai facts')

Guinness Sports Record Book 1990-91. Sterling Publishing Co., 1990: 133.

"An electronically measured ball velocity of 188 mph was recorded by Jose Ramon Arieto at the Newport Jai Alai, RI, on Aug 3, 1979"

I amm a thrown fan because it will use my dex bonus indtead of strangth and I'm Curently playing a halfling so the bonus are good. o and Slings Are considered a thrown weapon, by th PhB. and by the Halfling class.

O and the comment about sling ammo costing. the good stuff does it's like stone or metal marbles or big BB's. but river rocks or pebbles are free and easy. However they give you -1. it's a trade off.

Bows and such have much better ranges and since (in 3.5) ranged weapons apply their magical properties to their ammunition, it's much much cheaper to get decent magical properties. Just buy the ranged weapon once and use 1 gp ammunition. Not to mention ease of multiple attacks.

Thrown weapons either have to be enchanted as returning or seriously risk being lost when the target runs away or stolen, and quickdraw is a necessity to get off more than two attacks (assuming you're holding two throwing weapons) with anything other than shuriken.

Heh. In my games, magic isn't commonplace, so thrown weapons and bows are about equal.

That said, I voted thrown. Because bows are freekin overdone.

Bow/Crossbow/Sling. There was a reason for the New Stone Age.

However, a throwing weapon might be preferable for a melee specialist who has high Strength and only expects to make one ranged attack on his foes in the first round before he charges.
