D&D 5E To much 5th edition content?

People wishing for player-facing compilations will be waiting for a LONG time. ;) This is how WotC is making their money while cutting back on their book schedule. Players can't just get away with buying a single book and have now three more years worth of material to use... if they want lots of new options they have to continually pay up just like DMs have been doing for the past 40 years.

Players now have to think and act like DMs. Which in WotC's mind is a good thing, because it means these players might be more inclined to also start becoming DMs just to get use out of all this stuff they are buying. And thus the circle of available DMs widens, thereby opening more tables, thereby making more D&D players. Players can't hide in their little 'Complete Book Of' or 'XXX Power' holes anymore while making others DMs for them. LOL.
This is probably the best I've ever seen it put!

If WotC kept putting out 3 years of playable material out every year, D&D would be rolling into a new edition really soon. And that's a GOOD thing in my opinion.

Obviously people want to pay for a book with 50 sub-classes in it that are well tested, but that's the only purchase you're making for that edition for some time. How can you expect a company to want to indulge in a model that has literally ruined the sellability of the game for 4 straight editions?

I think the new model is almost there. Each new season is like a new magic set, without the collectible aspect. New folks can hop on at the season and not worry about the old ones and avoid the initial inertia that would hasten treadmill fatigue.

Will that work after those new people are several seasons in?

Sure there are a growing number of new folks, and that momentum may last for years.

Some of that new player growth is driven by existing folks, and fatiguing them can’t be good.

Can the seasonal plan work for us existing customers? It is for me, but is it sustainable?

Remains to be seen, really, but people turn 8 every day...

We are in uncharted territory for WotC by now. 5E's full launch was six years ago as if the end of this month (I remember getting the Starter Set from my FLGS and playing for the first time on July 4th, 2014...). When 3E, 3.5 and 4E were 6 years old, their replacements had all been released commercially...

The trick is to stop following this forum and reviewer on utubes.
They will always remind you that there is a new build for mage, a new cantrip for rogue, a new cheese MC options and so on.
