D&D 5E Todd Kenreck Interview, Crawford Teases Hobgoblin News

Of course physical books aren't going to be deleted, but I was under the impression that the new racial and creature stats would be the official version going forwards.
But they sit along side the older versions. There is no edict saying "the old ones are illegal now".

It's not a case of being "bound", it's a case of something for a product more than a year out wouldn't be ready for testing.
We don’t know that. This is exactly what I mean.
And Spelljammer has been mentioned. But is unlikely IMO, since space hobgoblins are not fae and are not an important part of the setting. Any other classic setting is even less likely. - the Feywild as we have it now is relatively new to D&D. (okay, Nentir Vale is new enough, but is a very unlikely candidate).
They may not be actually related to the Feywild. This would hardly be the first time they did a UA fakeout like that.
This seems plausible.

Could also be some sort of boxed set or other non-standard product, but in that case it would be inherently unguessable.
Which is why I laughed at the “like what?” post in the first place. The whole point of the thread is “oh hey what could this be?”

They have an ability that specifically ties them to the Feywild rules in Witchlight.

Aliens might come down and bring their own version of D&D with them. Sometimes the unlikely happens, but if you start trying to make plans based on the most unlikely thing happening, you will never get anywhere.

There are an infinite number of unlikely places the fey hobgoblin might show up, and one that is not unlikely - Monsters of the Multiverse. It the Fey hobgoblin certain to be in that? No. But it's less unlikely than any of the other options.

Lol okay.

I wouldn't put much stock in the Fey label of the tested Hobgoblin: fluff is faked out in UA all the time, and indeed was in that same UA. The powers can be refluffed easily enough.

Thinking about it, my bet is that this is an older interview and the book in question is the Multiverse recombination. The Hobgoblin and Kobold from Volo's were not well received, and unlike the Orc haven't been retconned yet. Seems a likely place.

Sure. It's pretty much either an old interview or we are going to be surprised with an announcement fairly soon for a work containing the hobgoblin.

Yeah, interesting either way. I think there are more questions about what's coming out next year than answers, at any rate. We know one and a half books for sure (the Multiverse reprints/rewrites and the CR adventure), two in general (two Classic Settings, maybe one of which is Spelljammer, but a lot of odd possibilities here), and probably one in principle (a September Adventure, unless they CHANGE EVERYTHING). They probably have at least one book, maybe two, that are surprises: they have five book lead producers, and the CR and Multiverse books don't seem that they would take the exclusive attention of any of them.

Exactly. I look at what is announced for next year, and frankly I definitely see room for a surprise or two.

Especially since aren’t one or two of the books in 22 cases where they were meant for this year?

The gift set with Xanathar's, Tasha's, and the hybrid combo of Volo's & Mordenkeinans with edited rules was originally for December, just in time for Christmas. Indeed, it would seem that the Multiverse book was supposed to be Crawford's work output for 2021. Know someone just getting into D&D? Buy them the core rules gift set and/or the splat combo bookset, pretty good plan.

So, yeah: some slight oversight for the CR crew, one producer for the September Adventure, one each for the Classic Settings...I think there may be two wholly unannounced and unhinted at books next year. I really wouldn't be surprised at either a Kamigawa or Dominaria Setting book from the Magic side, and something genuinely surprising is always doable.

Absolutely. So that invites speculation. What settings for D&D or MtG make sense to highlight Hobgoblins by themselves, or for Goblinoids to play a central role generally?

Remembering, always, that they aren’t bound to canon, and many MtG settings could stand some expansion.

I’d say Hobs are a great fit for either Kamigawa or Dominaria, but also I could see some retconning of a classic setting to give hobs or goblinoids generally a more central and/or heroic role.

If it’s Kamigawa, they may be threading a very narrow needle with Hobgoblins, but we will see.
