Towards a Grittier d20 Trek!

Well here's my effort.....

HOPE STRANGE CHILD
Hope was born during the late 20th century and was found in a cryogenic state on board a very old and very alien ship that has yet to be identified as belonging to any known race or civilization, the ship itself is small enough to fit (rather cramped) in the Wanderer's hanger bay and is in fairly good repair. When not on duty, the starship's chief engineer can often times be found crawling around it, in it and on it, hoping to figure out what makes it tick.

Hope herself remembers little of her past and what she does remember is in bits and pieces that usually come through in dreams and nightmares. No one is quite sure why she doesn’t remember, the main theory is that the trauma associated with her abduction made her loose her memory.

The strangest thing of all is that she has a full set of skills and knowledge that seems to be at times quite modern and then quite archaic as well. Neither she nor the crew understands this phenomena and can only guess that while she was in hibernation, the ship somehow fed her sleeping brain certain skills and knowledge.

In fact, she doesn’t even remember her real name, the crew gave her the name of Hope and the ship’s security officer called her a very strange child, so thus, she was named. Hope Strange Child. While the technology of the 24th century is mostly over her head, Hope has found that people remain largely the same, regardless of species and she has no trouble in dealing with most of those she encounters. Behind the innocent guile, she is quick and calculating and a survivor through and through. In her spare time, she is learning how to pilot a ship, especially hers as well as trying to master the various technologies aboard the ship itself.

The Wanderer's chief (and only) doctor had recently took a full phaser blast in the chest from a peeved Klingon, so the captain drafted Hope into the position of chief medical officer as she was the only one handy with the right skills. Her bedside manner is best described as a cross between a Klingon with a hangover and irritated viper. Unlike the previous chief medical doctor, she always packs a couple of weapons and when the situation calls for it, she doesn't hesitate to use them.

Now that's what I'm talkin' about...

According to a set of writer's guidelines I read a while ago... every paragraph of an RPG should give one an idea for a game session.

You did that. Awesome!

It helps when the player is as evil minded towards her own PC as the DM is likely to be or more so :] . With that character, she's probably headed towards a psionic class, maybe telepath.

I envision her medical bay as having a sign over the door saying 'This ain't med school!' and the rather burned foot bones of the previous doctor hanging from a hook in one of the room's corners and another plaque 'He didn't duck fast enough' (the foot was the only thing to survive the Klingon's attack).

I'll contribute ...

Nimal

If no one ever trusts a Romulan, the Wanderer's chief engineer gives them no reason to. The only thing Nimal can be relied upon to do is take care of the ship and it's systems with a quiet grace that makes it look simple. Crewmen that abuse or mistreat her, as minorly as propping their boots upon consoles, usually experience small malfunctions: quarters environ controls stuck on Cardassian summer; replicators interpreting Yammok sauce as orange paint. Nimal fixes these casually with a polite apology for the inconvienience.

No proof of sabotage has ever surfaced, nor would any suspect him. He's takes great pride in installing the best software and upgrades available in the Federation. How he's able to acquire these with such a modest maintenance budget is wisely left unasked.

Questions to his background are often met with oblique answers. He "likes it here" in Federation space. What is a Romulan doing here? Where else would he be? Romulan space. He likes it here. Always with an opinion on the given situation, Nimal is never argumentative, merely observant. Some believe his brow ridges are make up, that he's actually a Vulcan. But masquerading as the subject of much curiosity would be illogical, wouldnt it?

Regardless, Chief Engineer Nimal is as productive and loyal as any member of the crew ... so far. The light green 1.9m tall Romuan wears his dark brown hair shoulder length in an uncharacteristic pony tail. His thin 85kg frame usually sports utility coveralls, which magically remains perfectrly pressed and clean no matter what job he's just finished. Cool amber eyes seem they would remain unimpressed by anything.

Unearthed Arcana has a section on Flaws and Traits. I say we leverage the Open Content nature of the thing and swipe it for d20 Trek... who's with me?

As the show says, let's boldly go, as long as we have fun along the way.
But you also have to remember that the flaws and traits are there to help flesh out a character, alot of players like to develop character flaws/traits on their own as the game/campaign progresses. :p

Whenever you want to do a pbp play test of this, I want in. ;) Preferably from the time Hope is found. lol

I'm working on "merging" the MSRD & Future SRD (plus the bits of UA my son is working) files at the moment... then there will be several "worked example" campaigns.

I think I'll do:

1. The Voyages of the Wanderer (Non Starfleet using the characters we're doing in this thread)
2. NCC-517 Ajax (Pre-TOS Era Starfleet vs. Klingons (Out-Kirks Kirk))
3. Captain Alexander Chase Enterprise-J and his Starfleet cyborgs (New Animated Series (If it actually happens)

Other ideas?
