TURTLEDOME!: Battle Bone (DM: KenHood, Judge: Lord S.)

[sblock=Kenhood and Hadarai only]
"Boooo! Boooo!"

A woman stands up and shakes a fist. "Yah! You'd be a-sayin' that! Yuir an 'venturer, joost lahk him!"

Wuh-what? ...Oh, I see. So just because I'm covered in flames and wield the powers of the Primordial Chaos, I don't have feelings anymore? I guess it's a crime in Daunton to be a little... different. Emral turns away from the crowd and winces.

Bluff Check for Sympathy 1d20+9=17

I only became an adventurer because I wanted to help people. I know you all think the world of me, and I have to tell you how great that makes me feel. I'm lucky that way, but there are so many adventurers who didn't have that, who only ever get the road or the dungeon. Misunderstood people who hurt a lot, who need to be somewhere when they don't fit into a village or city.
But... sometimes misunderstanding goes both ways. Sometimes adventurers forget how important other people are. Sometimes we speak from the "hurt" instead of the "heart".
Does that sound like anyone you know... Hadarai?

[sblock=FitD & DM]ooc:fitd posted two rounds in a row, so I'll do so too. Of course, the first check goes after Ken's last post, and the second after ftid's last post. Sorry for the confusion.

As the crowd starts booing at Emral too, Hadarai realizes he'd better distract them however he can. Stepping forward before Emral and on the edge of the stage, Hadarai, without speaking a word, lowers his weapon, and starts going through a rather basic training pattern: high slash, low slash, mid-section, thrust, shield blow, turnaround, in a series of variants at growing speed. Finally, the eladrin performs a complex attack-parry-finish form ending it with a resounding blow of the flat of his sword on his shield.
Despite the clear simplicity of such an exercise at the eyes of an expert, it is performed with considerable polish and precision, expecially to a crowd of artisans and farmers.

ooc: Athletics: stunt to impress crowd and distract the people from Emral's sudden drop of popularity: 19.
EDIT: Actually, the correct result is 20, since the modifier should be +8, not +7.

As Emral's words somewhat appease the crowd, Hadari sheates his sword, and massages his temples, keeping himself from sighing again.
And why would you be so hostile after all? If memory serves me right, Were not the Five themselves, heroes of the people, not loved at all at the start of their rise? Were they not disagreeable too, in their difference from the mass??

ooc: History check: Roll Lookup nope, apparently the Five were always that popular. Sigh, how could I forget that history is made from the victors?

[sblock=Emral and Hadarai only]Hey, fireinthedust, don't forget: you have to take turns.

The maneuver has managed to distract the crowd. Some applaud. Some "ooh" and "ah". Some seem a bit puzzled at the sudden display of swordmanship in the midst of oration--maybe even a little displeased. All-in-all though, it seems to have stopped the boos. The crowd seems more willing to listen.

Wuh-what?...Does that sound like anyone you know... Hadarai?

Emral opens the floor to his friend, motioning towards the crowd.
People nod their heads thoughtfully. You see a woman daubing tears from her eyes. "He makes a good point," says a middle-class fellow seated at one of the tables.

As Emral's words somewhat appease the crowd, Hadari sheates his sword, and massages his temples, keeping himself from sighing again.

A man in priest's dress stands and raises a finger. "That's not strictly true, sir," he says, "The Five had immense popularity with the general people, as they were well known for acts of heroism and charity. Though extremely gifted and powerful, they never lorded their abilities or status over the general public. Indeed, they felt a responsibility to protect and cherish the common man."

"I think the real issue here is that you clearly blame others for their responses to your actions, rather than perceiving that your actions, in and of themselves, were inappropriate. In essence, sir, you are in the wrong, not us, so you should not question the reasons for our hostility. Instead, you should look within yourself and determine what it is about yourself that makes you so unlikeable or even unlovable to the people whom you purport to defend."

"The simple fact of the matter, sir, is that you would not be in this situation if you had done as the rest of your companions and apologized to Marco. Consider this: Your behavior confused your own compatriots--individuals of the same social strata as yourself--with its inflexibility and unacceptable nature. Therefore, I humbly submit, that if you wish to appeal to us, you should appeal to us, repenting of your past behavior and making restitution to those you have wronged."

The priest sits. You hear many noises of agreement and approval from the crowd.

Success: 3 of 8, Failure: 3 of 4

[sblock=ooc]ugh! Weren't the required successes 6?
Damn... At the end of this, when we los our skill challenge (which we will), will you give Hadarai an achievement sounding like: "Hate throughout Daunton", please, Ken? :p[/sblock]

Lose? Bah, FitD never loses, he finds other opportunities to win!

also: can we get successes for doing things without rolling?
*******

Emral nods at the priest's words. I think that was very wise, good sir, and I'd like to thank you for clearing up a lot of confusion. I think also, though, that Hadarai's outburst shows how just-like the rest of us adventurers are. I know I've flipped out in my day, and mistaken what people are saying for personal attacks against me; even when those attacks weren't there to begin with.
I know the rest of the audience here knows Marco asked me to see if you'd come back to the team. We haven't had a chance to talk, Hadarai, but I think now's as good a time as any; better, because the crowd needs us, and it needs faith in their champions before we go into the Arena.
I'm not saying you don't have your reasons for being angry, even with Marco; but we need the team to work, to really work. Could we try, just once, talking about why you're so angry with him?

Nope. It was 8.

Sure! :D

Hmm...

I think that would work like being able to defeat opponents in combat without rolling. ;)

Salient Points
  • A good success with some good RP'ing will 'undo' a failure, adding a success and reducing the failure result.
  • You can still assist one another, gaining bonuses to your rolls.
  • There is a way (maybe two or three) to get automatic success in this challenge.

"Yeah," shouts an older woman.

"Ain't no reason for the way you treated that poor hunchbacked halfling in front of his kin," says a man.

"'e open'd 'is 'eart an' 'is 'ome to you, 'e did! If'n ye cannae 'preciate that, ye're one sorry sot!"[/sblock]

I think I can guess one... but it ain't gonna happen! :p

Hadarai dares the crowd once more: What would you do? If your companion raised his weapon to protect another, maibe naively, but with good will, and this person snapped and ordered you to drop your weapons or get out of his house? Is this how you'd want to be treated? Is this the behaviour of an open heart??

Diplomacy: 12. I'm afraid oratory fails this time...[/sblock]

A lot of shouts and boos erupt. People speak...rather, they yell...all at the same time.

"Yeah, well, you ain't the one what pulled a weapon to protect folk! That was the minotaur lady!"

"How would YOU feel if someone scared your wife, swinging around a sword?"

"It's like that priest said! He don't think he done nothin' wrong!"

"Marco just wanted to sit down to civilized dinner!"

"You're a bad man!"

"He's evil! Evil, I tells ya!"

The legbone of a turkey sails through the air, smacking Hadarai.

After that, more food flies through the air. A storm of bread, produce, and chewed meat.

You see a table flip over.

People begin to rush the stage...[/sblock]

[sblock=DM & FitD]ooc:Fine. Is there a way out of the pavillion that doesn't involve massacring dozens of civilians?

Very well. Hadarai unsheates his longsword and looks for a way out. If worse comes to worse...[/sblock]

At the sight of drawn steel, women shriek and men cry in dismay.

"He's a mad dog!"

"He'll murder us all!"

"I don't want to die!"

The angry mob turns into a panicked mob. People scream and run away, knocking over furniture and tearing down portions of the pavilion.

A few brave men gather in a tight knot between Hadarai and the escaping masses. They brandish daggers or chair legs. The priest moves out in front of them and spreads his hands, eyeing Hadarai as you would a rabid beast. "Listen, it's all been a misunderstanding. There's no need to hurt any of these people. Please, put away your sword, and let us leave unharmed."[/sblock]
