I'm proud to bring you yet another of the old Fair events: the Archery contest! After a little bit of tweaking this contest has been formatted to a slightly more freeform method of dicing. Here's how it works:

Archery Contest Basics:

To make this work, all you have to do is guage how good your character is by deciding their division and their bonus to attack. For example, a character who hasn't been practicing archery long, but has a natural knack for it, might might be mid-way into division 1, while a character who has been shooting arrows since they were old enough to hold a bow and has adventured for many years might be more at the high end of the Advanced division. In a similar way this allows those of you ISRPers who keep DnD character sheets for your characters to enter your character as appropriate to their level.

How does the competition run?

First the shooting order will be set. This is done by rolling a d20 (or a 20-sided dice) and going in order from highest to lowest in each division. In the case of a tie, the tied players will re-roll until an order is established. For example, 4 players in division 2 are participating. They roll to see who goes first and rolls as follows: Player 1 - 10, Player 2 - 7, Player 3 - 13, Player 4 - 10. Since player one and player four are tied, they have a roll-off and roll as follows: Player 1 - 5 and Player 4 - 15. The order would then go as follows: Player 3, Player 4, Player 1, Player 2

When it is their turn, players will declare their attack to the screen (such as "Player1 carefully draws back the string, lining up his shot down the shaft, the fletching brushing his cheek before he releases the shaft to fly.") Then they will roll their attack on warden where only myself and they can see it (the command is /tell warden !roll1d20 wizo_arcia,yourname). Using the submitted forms, I'll then calculate the total and describe if the shot hit, and to what degree, or how far off it was. Players get three shots per round and there's three rounds for a total of nine shots.

Targets and Scoring

In each round, the target becomes harder to hit. In round 1, the target is place one range increment away from the contestant. In round 2, the targets are moved further back to two range increments adding to the difficulty to hit. Finally, in round 3 the targets are set in motion by a clockwork device, again raising the difficulty to hit.

In Division 1 the targets will be Armor Class (AC, or difficulty to hit) 10 in round 1, 13 in round 2, and 16 in round 3.
Division 2 will be AC 14 in round 1, 18 in round 2, and 22 in round three.
And finally, Division 3 will be AC 18 in round 1, 23 in round 2, and 28 in round 3.

Where the target is struck is determined as follows. Your bonus to attack will be added to whatever you roll and that total will be compared to the AC of the target in that round. Points are tallied like so: a miss counts as 0 points, a normal hit counts as 3 points, a hit by five or more counts as 5 points, and a natural 20 counts as 10 points, i.e., a bulls-eye. A roll of 1 on the dice always counts as a miss.

The person in each division with the most points after three rounds is the winner. Any ties will be determined with a shoot-off, which runs like so: The shooters will take a single shot each, first at the round 1 target, then if still tied at the round 2 target, and finally if still tied at the round 3 target. If still tied after this, then the winner will be determined by the total number of bullseyes accumulated.

Contest Rules and Regulations
  1. Bows, except for mighty bows, and arrows will be provided.
  2. The use of magical items or spells is prohibited.
  3. Dice rolls will be sent via Warden, so that the entrant and the WizO Host are the only ones aware of the roll, i.e. !roll 1d20 wizo_arcia,my_name (no space)
  4. In the event an entrant does not have an adequate number of suitable opponents in their placed division, they will be asked to move to another division. For a move up, the entrant will be given, via magical means, a base attack bonus at the base of the new division. In the case of moving to a lower division, the entrant will be given, via magical means, a base attack bonus at the maximum of the newest division.**
  5. Please read the details of the competition for the information on scoring, attack modifiers, and other technical issues. The WizO's running the competition reserve the right to make judgement calls in the interest of promoting an honorable and fair competition. Questions or comments about the contest and/or its rules should be sent to arcia@wizo.wizards.com with Archery Combat mentioned in the subject line.

Allowed Weapons
The following bows are permitted in the contest:
  • Composite Long Bow
  • Composite Short Bow
  • Longbow
  • Short bow

Divisions and Attack Bonuses
Division 1 (Beginner): BAB from 0-5, maximum attack bonus is +8
Division 2 (Intermediate): BAB from 6-12, maximum attack bonus is +15
Division 3 (Advanced): BAB from 13-20, maximum attack bonus is +23

  • Base Attack Bonus (BAB): The measure of your character's pure skill without factoring in training, feats, skills, etc.
  • Attack Bonus: The measure of your character's skill with the bow after factoring in training, feats, skills, etc.
  • Maximum Attack Bonus: The maximum attack bonus a character in any given division can have. If your character's attack bonus would exceed the cap then you must either a) lower the attack bonus to the maximum or b) move your character into a higher division (where possible).

**For all intents and purposes "via magical means" translates into the use of Adele's Equalizing Force.

Hi!

It's not letting me sign up. It says I have to fill all required fields.

BTW: I'm getting nothing for a Base Attack bonus; there's nothing in the drop-down list box.

More Problems

Aye, I'm also having a few troubles...
I signed up today around 3:30-ish (CMT) and it's now 9:20 and my name isn't on the registered list. Is this normal or was my registration not recieved?

mjg> You must fill in all the forms on the sign-up sheet. To get the BAB menu, you will have to choose a division, even if it's division one. By choosing your division, the BAB you can choose from is set.

Lawbringer> Entries must be manually approved so it takes some time. Yours should be up now

All Archer who should be approved for the contest are now approved! I will not be approving anymore archers past this time.

To make sure you are on the approved list check out http://wizo.wizards.com/uncon/pages/events/archery.php

If your division has been adjusted it is because the total attack bonus you listed is either too high or too low for your division. You have therefore been placed in the appropriate division.

Final notes!
  1. You should arrive in the arena by or before 7pm PST. Please don't be late as we have limited time to run this event!
  2. Remember, you will not recieve any of your magical bonuses to attack during this contest
  3. Also, you will not be using your character's own bow during this contest. Instead warden will provide each character a bow of the type selected on you character sheet
  4. Finally, remember this is an In-Character contest. All OOC speech and questions need to remain in PMs.

That's all :) I look forward to seeing you all at the competition tonight!

-Arcia

P.S. If you would like to arrive early to get a feel for how the contest will run, feel free to do so! Arcia will be in the Arena by 6pm PST

We have our winners for the In-Character Archery Contest! The scores for all archers are posted up on the in-character Emporium Corkboards. Go there to see them!

Until next year!
