Unexpected TPK: Unbalanced, bad circumstances, or fluke?

What about a Cleric-laser build and a paladin heavy hitter. Both can heal the other, both can enter melee, both can do ranged?

Dude, check your spelling. It's not laser, it's LAZOR. Plural form LAZORZ. ;)

Otherwise, that sounds like a very solid 2-person party.

I must have missed a meme somewhere, can someone point me to the source of this? What's a lazor cleric? Is it the wisdom build cleric? Are the lasers the range-5 at-will powers?

Yes, they're the range 5 at wills. Radiant = Light = Laser.

Hey, im the "cowardly warlock" as i seem to have been nicknamed...

First off we had nowhere to run to...
second it was an ambush...
aaaand third it was indoors.

With that out of the way explain to me how leaving the fate of the entire party on one roll is a good idea?

lets think this through... i roll and miss and both of us get mauled by big firebeetles.... or i get lucky and make the roll and probably die in the process quickly followed by a rather unfair two on one...

so we're dead either way.

This way i left the rolling to the cleric and when he missed twice i decided to get back to help... course i missed the roll. and then he had to deal with one beetle rather than two...

so explain to me how my move was poor tactics?

especially if they used thier breath attacks again...

Well, either way, don't forget to use your action point.
Whether you're trying to win the combat solo or save your buddy, it would have been invaluable.
