Unpopular Geek Media Opinions

We’re still doing opinions we think are probably unpopular, right?….
That’s the ticket! Thank you for sharing.

I agree about Tolkien (apologies). I have mixed feelings about Who and HP and Firefly.

But now I want to learn about the editor(s) of HP*, and what the heck this “Star Fleet” was.

* re: HP, I thought the first three books were solid and fun. And I thought the third was quite good. But then it just got messy and bloated and didn’t bother with character growth or complicating the simple stereotypes and prejudices it started with - as one should when transitioning from childhood to adulthood.

But then that’s just a curiosity, given where the author has gone. But it would fit my general hypothesis that everyone needs a skilled and ruthless editor who will challenge them into delivering their best possible work.

There is a tipping point where a creator gets “too big” for anyone to be able to edit their work.

In the book world, the editor holds the power initially. “You’re going to cut this stuff or we’re not going to publish this book.”

But at some point the author becomes famous enough that they can say, “No, this stuff is important, and you can’t tell me what to do.”

You can also see it in film - case in point being George Lucas. The OT is great because he had to listen to the studio execs or whoever and edit his work for theatrical release.

By the time he made the PT, though, he was big and famous enough that no one dared critique his vision. He also went on to tinker with the OT several times to make them more how he wanted.

- The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales are an incoherent mess, the product of unholy necromancy on Tolkien’s waste paper basket to keep the money coming. They are not as bad as their main by product, the Fionavar Tapestry.
Yes, yes! The boringest of faux history and myth, packaged into one unreadable whole.
- Firefly was just bad, honestly.
Rewatched it recently, still great. Even got my wife on board, which is tough.

- Harry Potter is just awful, especially after the editor quit (some time around book 5). Almost any modern YA fantasy series is streets ahead - pick your favourite. Rick Riordan’s work alone beats it into a cocked hat.
I agree, but i was probably too old for it anyway, so never really got the hype
- Pretty much all modern Dr Who is pants apart from a few episodes.
Modern? It’s mostly all pants.

Tom Bombadil is stupid and useless and should have been edited out of Lord of the Rings.

In the middle of a Jurassic Park rewatch... No, just no, Lex deserved to die. I know scared kids can act irrationally, but Lex goes against any survival instinct. Even the girl in Fallen Kingdom comes as more reasonable. I mean, burrowing under the bedsheats won't save you from an angry Dino, but running and hiding are the right instinctual responses when faced with a big predator, not going out of the way to broadcast your presence to it.

Really both Genaro and Malcom would have been unharmed if she didn't have the selfpreservation instinct of a hamster.
Related: Jurassic Park might be the worst book I have ever read.
