Updating Older Files

While looking through some of my PDFs, I wonder, do publishers ever update their older books with new art and layout after it starts making profit to make it a better product?

The one area where PDF usually lingers well behind print products, is in illustrations. I love the Iconic Bestiary for example, but would'vel oved it more if every monster was illustrated.

I've done that with a few products over the years. It's not usually worth the effort but sometimes a product just begs for an update.

I'm in the process of slowly doing it with a few PDF's. My main problem is that I keep wanting to update and expand the content as well

Yeah, updating my backlist is something I do regularly. I also always issue free copies of the updates to everyone who buys the original.

Someday Joe's Book of Enchantment will have illustrations. I already have the covers I just need to get the text up to 3.5e (dang juggling of spells... power word spells should not be enchantments!!! Is the word for Power Word, Blind "I insist that you cannot see!"? Rediculous!)

After I've managed to put out a good number of my "A Touch of Evil" products, I plan on doing a POD anthology of the products, with updated information on existing antagonists, new antagonists and any other updates to the existing line that I think are necessary.

I'm not sure how well-recieved it will be by the public, but the IDEA is to entice people to buy the new version of older products not simply because it's in print, but because they will be getting more for their money than just re-hashed material.

Any thoughts?

Alea Publishing Group is planning to update A Question of Honor: A Guidebook to Knights with new art and layout as well as some new content.

The purpose is to fill in a few areas that we didn't have rules for at the time and didn't just want to put well established rules. Also, we want to take out a few rules that are too cumbersome and make the prestige classes a little more streamlined.

I think it is necessary to update pdfs. since it is strong point over print products (but only if the product needed it). It is always better to push ahead rather than linger behind.

Updating isn't the wisest idea unles its for a new edition of the game system. Too many PDF buyers fear "+h3 $p4m" and never receive notifications of the updates. One updated ARP product had email notification reach a mere 8% of the customers through RPGnow's notification system.

I feel it is better to stick with releasing web enhancements and save the updates for a new edition of the ruleset.
