Veronica Mars - Season 2 Premiere Tonight [Spoilers]

Meh. VM is nothing more than a revival of Nancy Drew mixed up with the usual teen angst of previous teen angst shows of the last 10 years. Hardly original, just a new spin on already used premises.
That's the cynical view. But sure.

I don't really care about originality anymore - it's all about the execution of the concept. The characters should be a bit angsty as they are seniors in high school. If they weren't there would be something a little off. The show has plots that are interesting, characters that have depth and the presentation rarely dissappoints.

I never read it but if Nancy Drew is this entertaining than maybe I should have.

Heh. Fortunately, them Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys shows came out at a time when teens don't have angst, or questioning if their jeans should be much lower than it is now or who to give their virginity at Junior Prom night.

But like you, I'm not looking for the perfect original show to be entertained or impressed. Shows' premises are nothing but gimmicks. It's how you make them entertaining after the nostalgia wears off that will make or break a show's lifespan. That's where the story and character development come into play here.

That and seeing the starlet in a schoolgirl costume. Yeah, her 80's Madonna costume for that Halloween dance didn't do it for me.

It was there, just not explored. ;)

I have to disagree about the gimmick statement. Some shows are, but they typically fail. Are you trying to make the point that VM is a gimmick show?

Me either. Such a small part of that season and that ep. Didn't matter.

Every show has a gimmick of one spin or another. It's what initially attract the audience. But once you have their attention, how are you going to keep them watching your show, week after week? That's where your creative storywriting juice is applied.

So, just rewatched the episode. There's a scene right before Duncan and Veronica get on the bus at school (for the field trip) where they run into Logan. The last thing Logan says, and very final-seeming, is "I'm going to miss you, Veronica." DUHNDUHNDUHN! As though he knew what was going to happen to the bus.

I disagree. Some shows have gimmicks, others have concepts and others are just there. And I do understand advertising as well, which has alot to do potential spin. VM was in no was advertised as a gimmick show. Now a show like 24, that was a gimmick show. Other times it's just advertising: maybe it's star power (producer or actor), maybe it's a spin-off or maybe it is something like "every show takes place in real-time, over one hour and the whole season is one day." The last one is a gimmick. The rest are just advertising.

And yes, you could try and drudge up a "gimmick" for just about any new show depending on promos or even perception but that's all it would be - looking.

I don't know- if you go with that theory, you have to believe he was also willing to kill off (or seriously injure) his friends Dick and Beaver, as well as Duncan and everyone else on the bus.

I'm sticking with my "mayoral candidate-to-be's daughter was the target" theory.
