W1: Blacklily Violence (Completed!) [Rae Judging]

"We only surmise that the necklace will be sold tonight. If you attempt to charm him, Saithnar, it should be tomorrow, after a night's rest, for him and us. In any case, we must stow him somewhere safe. We cannot allow him an opportunity to get loose - he will not forgive us his present humiliation. A crossbow bolt through the heart would be safest, but even with the knowledge that he is a coldhearted killer, I do not wish to fall to his level. Also, he is more useful to us alive, as a source of information, or perhaps even a bargaining chip?" Conuld's face takes on an unusual expression: "Besides, I should like to lay my hands on his spellbook," he says.

"Well, if we're gonna rest, where then?" Solange asks. "If ya think we kin still find the necklace, maybe we kin press on a bit?"

"Is anyone hurt? I kin heal ya up a bit if ya like."

OOC: Didn't you mention that the necklace had some inscription on it?

"If we press on, the strong members of our party must carry the unconscious rogues, unless any of you has the stomach to slit their throats and roll them into the harbour. I do not. But from what we have learned of these Blacklilies, I am quite willing to do what I can to ensure the destruction of the gang." Conuld ponders. "I wonder if an unscrupulous sea captain would be willing to take on a few new crew members, no questions asked. The thieves could learn a more honest trade, and be taken far from Orussus for a time. But not Riffer." He kneels by the unconscious spellcaster. "When will he wake up? If we go to Arch Street, we will just be blundering into another fight. With Riffer's...help... we can make a more precise move."

OOC - Cassus said: "The necklace, by the way, is made of a platinum and gold alloy, and has three rubies set into the middle, with three tiny emeralds circling each ruby." Oh, but you were referring to the trinket necklace.

After studying the scrolls carefully, Tommy says "I believe I know what one of these scrolls is. As for the other, are you sure this is a scroll? It looks like a shopping list to me." Turning his attention to the wand, he mutters "Now, this pattern of carving reminds me of something, what was it?"

[sblock=ooc] 2 spellcraft checks (1d20+10) on the scrolls = 11, 28. (Natural 1 on the first, ouch!)
know(arcana) on the wand: 1d20+10=27 I'm not entirely sure why I'm making a kn(arcana) check, except that Trouvere did. Is there a way to identify wands with kn(arcana) that I don't know about?[/sblock]

Turning his attention to the group's discussion, Tommy examines the necklace and remarks, "Cassus Arimae mentioned that along with the Arimae heirloom necklace, several pieces of children's costume jewelry were stolen as well. It seems likely that the necklace we seek cannot have been long separated from this piece. We must push on! I believe our next stop must be Arch street, where the Blacklilies are said to contact their buyers."

"Excellent," says Conuld. "I knew that Academy education would come through for us." But he frowns. "We cannot go waltzing into Arch Street carrying Riffer slung over our backs, can we? Or maybe we can organise a trade, mage for necklace, right there?"
[sblock=OOC]From the SRDhttp://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicItemBasics.htm#spellTrigger: "Spell trigger activation is similar to spell completion, but it’s even simpler. No gestures or spell finishing is needed, just a special knowledge of spellcasting that an appropriate character would know, and a single word that must be spoken. Anyone with a spell on his or her spell list knows how to use a spell trigger item that stores that spell...The user must still determine what spell is stored in the item before she can activate it." and "Sometimes the command word to activate an item is written right on the item. Occasionally, it might be hidden within a pattern or design engraved on, carved into, or built into the item, or the item might bear a clue to the command word. The Knowledge (arcana) and Knowledge (history) skills might be useful in helping to identify command words or deciphering clues regarding them. A successful check against DC 30 is needed to come up with the word itself. If that check is failed, succeeding on a second check (DC 25) might provide some insight into a clue." No idea actually if a Kn(arcana) check is of use here![/sblock]

Cludge stows his greatsword (he may be an iconic dwarf some day, but for now he's still not an axe wielder ;))

Ha, sorry about that. I do the exact same thing with one of my players in my RL game.

The mage tries to mumble something, but the gag obviously prevents him from saying anything. Still very hazy, he begins to moan and mumble as he slowly regains consciousness.

Conuld picks up one of the throwing daggers and keeps it ready. With his other hand, he loosens the gag. "Riffer," he says, "where's Vanon got to?"

Riffer looks at Conuld for a moment, as his vision begins to uncloud. "Vannon...? What the...?"

He shakes his head. "Vannon's a little ticked at us. I kind of thought he had sent you after us....?" He pauses for a moment. "Doesn't matter. Maybe we make a deal...? Let me go, I... you want the necklace, right? Let me go, I give you the necklace."

"You sir, do not appear to have the necklace upon your person or on any of your accomplishes either. This would seem to make it difficult for you to give it to us, yes?" Saithnar asks with a sneer while thinking to himself, 'For now he is talking easily enough. I will save my Charming for someone whose lips are not already moving so freely...'

"What? Do you think I'm stupid enough to keep something like that ON me? Vannon would do his damnedest to have me killed! I mean, he's mad enough at me as it is. No, I'm not that stupid. I *am* a mage, you know."

He licks his lips, and stares at his pointed hat wistfully. "Here's the deal. Let me go, I tell you where the necklace is. You swear on it, of course - you seem like men of your word. And then, I leave you alone."
