D&D 5E Was Tempest an odd choice for PC-centric domain?

If there is a gap here, I chalk it up to Forgotten Realms religion being incredibly dumb. I'd much rather have a storm domain than travel or "civilization," which might be important to various campaign worlds but don't really lend themselves to adventuring.

You might think FR is "dumb", but its also the primary campaign setting WotC is using right now. And all the FR deities that logically fall under Tempest are evil. Whereas the Greater Deities that are non-evil and not the elemental gods include (with their presume 5E cleric domains):

Chauntea (Life domain)
Kelemvor (Death - in DMG?)
Lathander (Light)
Mystra (Knowledge)
Oghma (Knowledge)
Selune (Trickery)
Silvanus (Nature)
Sune (Trickery)
Tempus (War)
Torm (Life)

So my main point is that I just find it odd that they put more primacy on making sure there were domains for the "real world" pantheons moreso than the pantheons that their campaign settings use. In the end it's not going to be that big of a deal, it was just at interesting notice of their focus is all.

It may also be a deliberate attempt to give something to people who want something "unusual".

Like if 98% of clerics want to play a more traditional cleric, they can choose one of the other 6 domains. Lightning might be for the 2% who want to be unusual.

Well, ignoring my list above, you say that as if the Realms shys away from wholesale reshufflings of it's gods and what they do. Maybe Ao gets sick of all the fussing and pimps slaps the lot of them and makes them draw new domains out of a hat?

A storm domain seems like a great choice that would appeal to many character types. The odd thing to me is that none of these pantheons have a appropriate deity, not the other way around.

Where's the MAGIC domain? Man, but I hate D&D's insistence on dividing arcane and divine magic, to the point where they won't even allow Clerics of a god of magic! (For now, anyway.)

I like there being no magic domain, and wish they left nature out too (druids!). And I agree with the OP that storm god is weird for FR pcs coz talos/umberlee, but then as another poster suggested, FR has lots of gods, can probably find another to better suit pc alignment.

I don't really see the issue. I kind of wish we had more domains too, but we really haven't seen the domain system in its entirety yet. Once we know more about exactly what concepts each domain is actually covering, then we can more accurately assess what's missing.
