D&D 5E Was Tempest an odd choice for PC-centric domain?

I don't really see the issue. I kind of wish we had more domains too, but we really haven't seen the domain system in its entirety yet. Once we know more about exactly what concepts each domain is actually covering, then we can more accurately assess what's missing.

I think part of the issue is people are assuming these are like domains in 3.5, but I actually think they are meant to be seen as much broader. So Magic is the Knowledge Domain (or possibly Trickery).

I suspect we will know more when we see the list of Gods in the PHB appendices.

Agreed, from reading the fluff of the domains they're meant to be much broader because there are alot fewer of them.

For example in the Tempest domain discription it meantions Gods of Strength, Gods of War, Gods of Courage, Gods of Fire amd Gods Earthquakes, along with Storm and Water Gods. And I think Gods of Air are likely as well. I think that they plan to have all the Elemental Gods like Kossuth to have Tempest for Example, even though its not a great fit.

Trickery looks like it ate the Charm Domain as well, its a Good Domain for Gods of Trickery, Luck, Thieves, Illusions, Charm,Chaos, and Lust. Natures another expansive one, Light Meantions Gods of Light, Fire, and Beauty.

Knowledge could also double for the Arcane, but barely, Light seems better with more iconic wizard spells.

Life is a universal domain to some degree amoung none evil gods.

Well, ignoring my list above, you say that as if the Realms shys away from wholesale reshufflings of it's gods and what they do. Maybe Ao gets sick of all the fussing and pimps slaps the lot of them and makes them draw new domains out of a hat?

Yeah, I'm not really worried. They've historically cared so little about the consistency and overarching lore of Faerun that they kill off half the pantheon every time there's an edition change. If anything, I'd be a bit nervous for Umberlee, because I'll lay better than even odds they bring in a new neutral or good storm god just to fit the PHB better.

...

But what seems odd is that as I've gone through the various pantheons of the "fantasy settings" of the game (IE the non-real-world ancient pantheons like Greek, Norse, Egyptian)... it seems as though the Tempest (or "storm god") domain is one that does not appear for most PC-centric deities (or else doesn't also fall under another domain.)

...
So other than a campaign that uses Thor or Zeus as part of their pantheon.......

So, it means they are not letting the tail wag the dog?

Yes, only Zeus, Thor, Indra...and there is this famous book (like the most published) and there is some storming in there.

Don't worry, they will figure out something with their deities, that won't be hard (and then people can debate about it here).

Exactly. People are taking the 3e unterpretation of the gods and trying to apply them to 5e. Going to go with Tempest domain for Tempus.

Tempest clearly shows that the Death domain excuse is just a cheesy excuse, that's for sure.

However, I think it's more a odd name than a bad choice, because it's basically "Sky/Weather", which was a common domain for non-nasty gods in historical pantheons.

I was happy to see Tempest because I have a homebrew that I may run based on Norse and Egyptian mythology. Of course I need Death for all the Anubis clerics, so yeah, um darn.
