D&D 5E (2014) What about warlocks and sorcerers?

However they do, scribe scroll and brew potion are totoatlly out of place on anything that isn't an scholarly caster, something Sorcers, Psions and Warlocks aren't by default. Also there isn't much hope they'll change it, Mearls was very explicit when questioned in the matter, he is fine with them.

It would seem ludicrous that he wouldn't take a survey on this design concept after asking us about everything else. If they want to group multiple spellcasting systems under the Mage, they need to do it without screwing with these other classes.

I think they're assuming that this was what people wanted after the warlock/sorcerer complaints. The problem as I see it is they're just assuming they've solved a problem without asking us (yet) if we think it's the right solution.
I even think it is a good solution; people want mages with different spellcasting mechanics. But I don't think it's a good solution for for every class.

I agree that the idea of a Mage meta-class for other spellcasting systems isn't necessarily a bad idea. The problem is the are trying to use all these other existing and well liked classes as the alternate spellcasting systems and that is really stomping on the toes of the players who play those classes.

The revolt before was when they said different mechanics would be based on class. Wizard players wanted access to different mechanics. The solution isn't to say mechanics will be based on subclass if it also means that those subclasses are just the different classes we had before.
The wizard then still isn't able to play a wizard with a different mechanic, he's still being forced into playing a sorcerer for the different spell system.

I don't see why they couldn't approach mages the same way they did the fighter, with different subclasses changing how you play the class according to preferred playstyle while still leaving room for more non-standard fighting classes outside of the "basic" core 4.

Honestly, when people say they want different spellcasting system options, they really mean a spell point system. The reason is because most people do not like psionics and that is the only place you can find a point based system in D&D. They could easily just include one for the Wizard in the DMG.

Scribe Scroll and Brew Potion should be feats, anyway. Give them to the Wizard for free as class features if you want, but they should be feats.

As it is, the Mage does not have good feat support. That was a question on the survey, and I had to answer negatively.

Scribe Scroll and Brew Potion are features I'm against for all Mages, in some ways I think that if they aren't replaced by ability increases/feats (which might seem a little homegenous) which I feel Mages don't get enough, then they should become some choice between other crafting types. Maybe not all of them like in 3e, but at least a couple other choices like Craft Wand or Craft Staff.
