What actors/actresses get a raw deal in Hollywood?

MEG Hal

First Post
Ashton Kuschner (sp?) seemed to get slammed for Butterfly Effect yet people on here said it was not that bad...

Bruce Willis IMO gets this raw deal as well, John Travolta gets praised for Pulp Fiction, Willis gets nothing etc...

so add your star to the list.

Yeah, I dislike the Hollywood public image game.

Although, most times I can't tell who's worse at being judgemental...Hollywood or us. Ever have a bunch of guys sitting around saying they won't go see a certian movie because a certain "pretty-boy" actor is in it? Why's that? Why do we suddenly have it in for a guy just because he has lots of lady fans gushing over him? Player hating? :D Heh heh heh.

And the thing about Hollywood that is unfair is that it doesn't matter if you acted well. If they didn't think the movie was artistic, the performance didn't count. For instance, you act really well in a Star Trek movie.....bzzzz....dont' count. You act just as well in "Cold Mountain"....boom...GOLD!

Only exception to this is what I call the "old pervert man applause". Its when a lot of critics rave about the performance of a young actress, regardless of the film they were in. Marisa Tomei in "My Cousin Vinny" for instance. Or Juliette Lewis in "Cape Fear". They go on this binge of raving how great these new up and coming actresses are.....but its really a more cleverly diguised version of fanboy perving in my opinion. However, its not to say they didn't do a great performance.....they did, but so did a lot of other actresses that year. But the others weren't this young shiny new thing on the scene.

I think Brad Pitt is in that boat. Personnally i've seen just about everything he's been in and i think he's a damn good actor. He's made a bunch of really good movies, and Cool World. :p

I'd also say Dicaprio, falls in there. Granted he's not my favorite actor in the world, but i thought he was good in Gangs of New york.

I think it also works the opposite way at times. I can't stand Denise Richards in anything, but she keeps popping up on movie after movie.

I actually like Ben Affleck quite a bit. The guy gets a lot of flack, but I think that he's pretty good. Lately, he has made some poor choices (Pearl Harbor, Gigli, Paycheck) but I really liked him in all of his Kevin Smith-movie appearances, Good Will Hunting, Daredevil, Changing Lanes, etc. I think most of the bad rap he gets is because of over-exposure due to the whole 'Bennifer' thing, but I've heard people bad mouth him ever since he appeared in Armageddon. It was like he was okay when he just did indie work, like Kevin Smith's films, but once he decided to appear in a Hollywood picture people decided that he 'sold out.' If someone offered any of us the kind of money they do him, we'd star in Pearl Harbor or Gigli as well.

Don't need to tell that to Sean Astin. I'm still amazed Sigourney Weaver picked up a Best Actress nomination for Aliens.

Funny :D

Kurt Russell - Yea, he has been around for ever and is a cult icon but I don't think people realize just how good he is.

Steve Bussci (sp) - pop-eyed, pasty, and always makes the other stars look good.

John Cusack - just never went headliner.

Don't forget that Sigourney's father was an entertainment industry bigshot. That always helps - it certainly did for Gwynneth Paltrow.

Actors like Steve Buscemi, John Cusack, Kurt Russell, Christian Bale, and Bruce Willis are actually admired among their peers and other craftsmen in Hollywood. They may not Academy nods or nods from publicity, but they are well respected by most.

The part of Hollywood that is giving them the raw deal....or shall we say, not giving them their due recognition are those that probably belong in the whole marketing part of the industry. And some in the production staff as well.

As far as the Oscars are concerned, well.....that whole voting system is so far messed up you can't really rely on it to be a gauge of skill & talent. Its just a popularity contest for the most part. Not to say all members of the academy are judging without any qualifications. A lot are. But there are many instances that fall outside of that as well and kind of taint the judging in my opinion.

Example: There's a friend of mine, who's boss is a member of the academy. He gets sent all the academy copies of things to be nominated and such. But he hardly gets around to watching them all. Many times, when it comes time to vote in his choices and the deadline comes up.....he does last minute decision like casually asking the babysitter, " Hey, who do you think was better? This guy or this guy?" Then the babysitter would be like "this guy I think".

See how precise the judging process is? Great huh?
