What are the best CR 1 critters?

I actually have two questions.

1.) Are the creatures in the Creature Catalog OGC? Or is special permission needed if you want to publish them? How did Tome of Horrors go about it?

2.) What are the best creatures for a CR 1 dungeon? Best can mean toughest, most evocative, most classic, or whatever.

Thank you.

The best CR 1 dungeon I've ever played in was... we were supposed to clean out someone's basement. We went down there and behind some boxes here and there we fought rats or weasels and spiders came down on us... basically a lot of partial CR critters.

Lots of fun.

that one's easy. ;) yes, the Creature Catalog creatures are OGC, and of course you must include the proper section 15 references and all that neat stuff. as far as needing special permission, well as i say, when in doubt always ask. :)

the fellow who owns the Creature Catalog site, and did most of the original conversions is Scott Greene - the same fellow who did most of the writing for the Tome of Horrors. :) so, let's just say... it was relatively easy to get persmission to use them!

if you were considering using the CC as an OCG source, i'd suggest inquiring further on these forums: http://pub123.ezboard.com/fnecromancergamesfrm31

So let's say I want to use the Uldra and the Tirapheg in a PDF. Does my SRD say:

Dragon Magazine, 1987, Wizards of the Coast [for the Uldra]
Fiend Folio (1st edition), 1981, Wizards of the Coast [for the Tirapheg]

or do I reprint the entire section 15 from your OGL? I'm a little confused about:

a.) How to site a book that does NOT have an OGL? Is this right?
b.) If I can site Wotc copyrighted material, which is what the CC creatures are (in name at least) but you're assuring me are OGC?

Thank you so much, I'd really like to use CC as a resource for an upcoming PDF venture I am writing.

i don't really have any answers for your questions; but i am curious so i bumped the thread you posted on the Necromancer forums. :)

I'd like to know the answer to that too. There is a certain "Thing" in the CC I'd like to use in a Random Encounter.

Of course, I'm not a lawyer or anything, but I would guess that you should do both. Cite WotC and the CC. But I don't really know.
