What are the cool games today?

I'm interested in playing the next cool game. What's out there that is:

Fun, runs on a PC, either turn based or RTS with very few things to keep tract of? While I like World of Warcraft, it turns into work rather than fun in short order for me. I am completely uninterested in the whole micro vs. macro thing.

StarCraft & BroodWar :D

Maybe not the newest out there, but still one of the best.

Other than that, Command & Conquer 3 is quite new and reportedly quite some fun, too.

Company of Heroes is still the RTS darling for most people. Supreme Commander and Command & Conquer 3 are newer games (released in Feb/March of this year) that were well received, but neither seemed to displace its status as top dog. It should be noted that the Dawn of War series (the Warhammer 40k RTS games made by Relic, who also did Company of Heroes) is very close to the same game, as CoH refined a lot of the elements started in DoW. So if you prefer a more sci-fi/fantasy bent, Dawn of War is right up your alley. The most current game in that series is Dark Crusade.

Naturally the Starcraft 2 announcement has everyone in a tizzy. Unfortunately that's a ways off.

As far as things definitely coming out this year, World in Conflict looks amazing. It's a game set in an alternate version of history where the cold war erupts into WWIII, and it looks to take place primarily on American soil. There's also a Company of Heroes expansion pack coming, along with rumors of a new Dawn of War (the ending to Dark Crusade teased "2007" in the ending credits).

I'm about to dive into Company of Heroes (rts), S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl (fps), and LotRO (mmo).

All three are pretty hot right now.

Copmpany of Heroes is pretty damn good. Supreme Commander was just 'meh' I thought, not as good as C&C3 anyway. I still haven't enjoyed an RTS as much as the first Ground Control, though. Maybe Homeworld -- I forget which came first.

(And I still don't understand all the Starcraft love -- I didn't think it was all that.)

LotR Online is ok, but too shallow and care-bear for my tastes.

Personally, I'm back finishing NWN2 (our multi-player group sort of fizzled) and playing lots of Civ4 again.

Well, have you tried the Sims 2? It a lot of ways, it's like a role playing game, you are only limited by your imagination (and how many expansion packs you buy).

For strategy games, I would suggest:

UFO: Extra Terrestrials

http://www.ufo-extraterrestrials.com/

Basically a knock off of of the original X-com. Not original, but I think it does a great job of capturing the original magic. It's hard though, they basically eliminated most of the exploits from X-com, and upped the UFO numbers.

For a mmo I'd recommend LotROnline. Sure, you can say it's carebear as far as PvP goes, but the world content is less forgiving than WoW.

For a FPS, it isn't new at all, but if you never played F.E.A.R. it's awesome (and play in the dark with the sound turned up a little if you can).
