What checks do you as DM make for the PCs?

Thanee summed it up best so far. I roll for the player whenever (1) the result of the roll or (2) the mere fact that a roll has been made would give the player more information than his character would have.

Search checks are a perfect example. If a character is taking a mere round to Search (and not taking 10), the character's player should have no idea if the character did a "good job" searching (rolled a 15) or a "bad job" searching (rolled a 5).

That's the direction I'm going as well.

I had a couple of players in my last campaign who would pipe up - "I'll search too" if the rogue made an exceptionally bad search roll. Naturally, they always failed, but it was kind of annoying.

Not a huge issue for sure, but I appreciate everyone's input.

BTW - I won't do it in my new campaign if there is any player-resistance. However, I don't really anticipate any.
