What did Red Steel do?

As in the D&D setting... Red Steel. Cinnabar and cinnabryl and all that. I checked it out in Google, but everything seemed to refer back to the main rules as if I was supposed to know what they are.

Would someone mind giving me the lowdown on those? Thanks!

REd Steel is a really kick ass setting for at-sea adventures, just like birthright is really good for nordic adventures. neither one was terribly popular, at least as i recall, but most of the rules are available in the 2e players handbook. im sorry if i havent been of much help. i really like these two settings for the situations i prescribed them for. if you are looking for rules on primitive firearms (arquebus and single shot muzzle loaded pistol) i recommend these rules:

40% chance misfire, proficiency required, 30% chance of target miss.

firearms are allowed in redsteel, so maybe i was of some help.

Possession of the substance helped prevent the onset of a terrible degenerative disorder caused by the residues of some kind of curse or magical disaster that enveloped the land, IIRC. Interestingly, the curse caused weird mutations, but eventually turned you into a horrible shambling creature if you were caught without any cinnabar for too long.

So, the Red Steel itself was mostly like L5R's Jade? Kept away evil radiation (yes, I know, oversimplifying)?

Red Steel was a "sub-setting" of the Mystara setting (in the same way that Al-Qadim was a "sub-setting" of Forgotten Realms - same world, a few links, but mostly independent), set in a part of the world that was reminiscent of the early Americas. It got an online revision, Savage Coast, which is available as a bunch of RTF files somewhere on the WOTC site (IIRC, it's under "downloads" and then "old editions").

One of the things in the setting is the Red Curse, which permeates the land. This curse grants people strange abilities, but also turns them into degenerates (by reducing their ability scores). A substance called cinnabryl prevents most of this degeneration, but it gets depleted in the process, turning into red steel. Red steel only weighs half as much as normal steel, and has the ability to count as a magic weapon for purposes of hitting things, as well as a silver and cold iron weapon (in 3.5e terms, it penetrates /magic, /silver, and /cold iron DR)

Really? I don't recall Red Steel having anything to do with sea adventures. I've played in the
setting, but I never own it. I didn't care for the "cat" and "dog" races, but the mutations were neat, if a tad overpowered (little reason to use cinnabryl).

It's got sea adventure, it's got smokepowder, magic, mutants, a bunch of weird races (ie. rakasta, tortles, lupin, araneas, winged minotaurs).....

In many ways it was like south-western america....there are many elements from Zorro as well, with ranches, gouchos, sombrero wearing lupins, all kinds of stuff.

I never got to play it, but it seemed pretty cool.

I never liked it (it was overpowered, and the theme of mutation in proto-americ with furry race natives just didn't appeal) but it did have Tortles and that was kewl
