What Is A Good D&D Mini Set To Start On?

OK so I grabbed a starter box and two boosters when these came out for my kid to tinker with, and then used them in my games for fun as well. Turns out I have a few $30+ value figures according to Auggie's prices.

What are my actual odds of turning in something like the shambling mound for an army or orcs, kobolds, goblins, etc. at a 'meet and trade' night? I'll probably never need a shambling mound for my games (not my style, what can I say?) so I wouldn't cry to trade it away, but don't want to get hosed

The basic set ain't a bad way to go. The box is big enough to pack all the minis for an adventure and you get some tiles too.

I had a look at the basic set at my FLGS today. It is $40 AUD but it is mighty tempting still.

the revised basic set is a good example of the minis. the ones in the set don't come with stat cards. and are labelled on the bottom as basic set minis. but they cover the basics. plus the paint jobs are better than most of the other sets. which ain't saying much.

overall the plasticrack from WotC is a bad buy. you are better sticking with the creature collections you have. really.

Out of curiousity, why are they a bad buy? I realize you are strongly anti WOTC, anti 3rd edition, etc, but you cant tell me that 2 bucks for a hill giant barbarian, pre-painted, isnt a good deal, when the similar fig in pewter would cost 10 bucks or so.

Not having the stat cards isn't an issue for me. I don't plan on ever playing the actual miniature skirmish game. As long as they work for my game it'll be fine.

Why do you think that D&D minis are a bad buy Diago?

He saw the days when pewter hill giant would have been about that much?

He can see how even cheap minis can add up to high costs?

He is a painter of metal figs and knows how much the pre paint plastics take a bite out of the metal mini market?

This advice comes from someone that buys cases and has some 1500 of the plasticcrack. Auggies has great selection, great prices, delivers fast....I can't recommend his store enough. You should be able to buy plenty of the commons and uncommons for a great price. Also, check Horedelings and maxminis for collectors that are selling off parts of their collection, you can usually find some nuggets.

If you want to buy the random packs, and have money, I suggest your FLGS as a way to support them. If you are only buying a few packs, saving $3-4 per pack by buying on line isn't that big a deal. I'd buy the oldest packs you can find. Also check half price books (if you live near one) as they occassionally have old basic sets or boosters. Join Borders Rewards. They'll send you a coupon 2-3 times per month for 20-40% off any one item, and they sell boosters.

Edit: Heck, I'd be happy to sell you a bunch of commons/uncommons from the last few sets. If you are interested, let me know, and I'll make up a list of monsters/pcs/....that I have lots of extras of that I can let go for a cheap price (not to mention a few rares for a fair price).

Well, I'm finally going to start the plasticrack habit. I've got a 10% voucher for my LGS that is valid for December only so I though I may as well put it to good use and give myself an early Christmas present.

I initially was thinking of getting 2 WotDQ boosters (the huge mini is really enticing). However the shop still has some Angelfire boosters available. The set is relatively old so I may end up getting a couple of Angelfire boosters and 1 WotDQ booster instead. To begin with I am looking for some PC type minis and a good mix of baddies to put up against my players.

I am still looking at getting a bunch of uncommon/common minis. If anyone has some that they want to sell let me know and we can arrange something. I have e-mailed Zaukrie and Merric through EN World but haven't received a response as yet. Let me know if either of you have received my e-mail.
