D&D (2024) What is the 2024 Bard Power Source?

I'll be pretty shocked if looking at the Bard spell list, it isn't substantially more similar to the Wizard and Sorcerer spell lists than the Cleric or Druid ones. Indeed I suspect it'll be like 80%+ Wizard spells. Perhaps as high as 95%.

So realistically, whatever spin people put on it, it's basically Arcane.

I actually think it'll be more of a broad mix so given the current list already leans wizard, I think you'll see more Cleric and Druids spells, plus some new ones.

In the video Crawford mentioned that their power comes from the words of creation that formed the universe, so I'll go with OLD MAGIC, the root that eventually split into three branches.

This is what I've been thinking ever since the playtest.

Since music, like all sound, is the result of vibration transmitted through air, the Bard’s power source is probably one of the more Planes of Air.

Specifically, the Jefferson Air Plane.

I view the Bard sonic magic as a form of psionic telekinesis, echokinesis.

The mental magical intention imbues the sonic vibration. It relates to using words to focus the mind and to divinate oracles.


The 5e Bard spell list is notable for lacking elemental magic, unlike Druid, Wizard, and Sorcerer that abundantly specialize in elemental magic.

Given the absence of elemental spells, it is hard for me to equate Bard with Arcane.

What kind of "protoscience" would lack elemental themes?
