Vote as per the title.

Assumptions:

1) 5 player characters in the campaign.
2) The bulk of the game will be Tier 2-Tier 3.
3) Feats Yes, multiclassing No. (No dips!)
4) Assume you're trying to strike a balance between these goals:
a) Diversity in character concepts and builds.
b) Overall group effectiveness.
c) Shared class synergy (wizards sharing spells, druids being able to group wildshape, mass first round fighter action surge, etc.)

Probably the best one would be Cleric. (Probably also the most boring)

I think Bard wouldn't be a bad pick either, since you can just call your party 'a band', get a talking familiar and go solve crimes :p

I'd say Bard.

You can still have a lot of diversity of play styles, including martial, social, and arcane. You have access to healing. And everyone can give everyone else inspiration!

One of the things to think about is that while clerics can fight, heal, and cast offensive spells (most of these other classes are deficient in one of those areas), for the characters to be significantly different you'd have clerics of different deities, who theoretically shouldn't get along.

A group of paladins or rangers could work--fight well with some healing ability. Bards are kind of the 'red mage' of classes (jack of all trades, master of none) and could work as well.

Multi-fighter parties are historically realistic (basically every military ever) but not very effective in D&D.

Some thief variants could easily work as a gang of thieves if you multiclass a little.

Groups of wizards work thematically (an evoker, a transmuter, and a necromancer go looking for a book of spells...) but are going to have a hard time healing up or dealing with combat.
