What is the biggest appeal in playing D&D?

When I'm being honest, I have to say that I find dealing with people really difficult. I get uncomfortable, just cannot make small talk, and find people in large numbers extremely tiring.

But, give me a campaign to run, and I come alive. The whole thing is so much easier. Probably because I always know exactly what I'm doing.

That's why I play.

fireball.

enough said.

Well more I suppose.

Orcus. He's fun.

Uhm demons, always fun.

Pretty much if it's not D&D I'm like "Why bother?"

Getting together with friends. Even if half the session is small-talk and digressions it's a fun time.

Though killing monsters and taking their stuff is highly pleasurable too.

Picking one thing is difficult. The social side is wonderful and the nostalgia of playing the same general game I did when I was twelve is also fun.

But for me it is the chance to exercise this muscle called an imagination. Too often in our boring lives filling our roles in society we have to be stoic, reasonable, responsible, and focused on boring small insignificant tasks. I enjoy the opportunity to be whimsical, fantastic, and surreal. I enjoy the fact that for a few hours a week I don't give a damn about balancing checkbooks, presidential elections, or filing out the work expense report, but rather slaying evil orcs, battling extraplanar excursions, or just saving the damsel in distress.

Yeah especially if you can find that lovely holy avenger with more powers than you can shake an Excaliber at! ;)

I came for the role playing and the game but I stayed because of the people I meet and get a chance to game with. THe creativity and challenge of running and playing a game is a close second.

Funny I thought you came here to prove who was the mightiest poster in En World and anywhere else for that matter, Crothy... ;)

D&D specifically? Putting together builds to get a character to come to life, not having to bother with creating my own spells or decide how to spend XP, the comparative ease of the game system to some others, almost the right balance between realism and abstraction, and most importantly: it's easiest to find players for it.

Role-playing in general? Being able to be more in command of my destiny, envisoning myself as an action hero, being able to wow people with descriptions or cool monsters/villains, building a character like I would for a novel or story and seeing him come to life.
