I can't decide if I'm socially awkaward, a jerk, or a socially awkward jerk; becasue virtually all of these statements apply to me.
I
don't want to play with overly sensitive weepy folks. Having a sense of humour should be a requisite for social interaction with me (I don't know about "toughness", but what the hell; I'll toss it in).
I don't back down from senstive or taboo subjects. Which is not to say I'm always on the same side of the argument/. People at my table get s***canned for racist commentary.
Racist jokes? Not so much.
A reasonably-intelligent, socially adept person could, I think, tell when a person's racist jokes are funny digs at stereotype and when they are an actual expression of hatred.
Same with Class, Gender, Nationality, and Competence jokes.
I consider myself one of those people and react accordingly.
I tend to think of Taboos as "buttons to push" more than anything else. Button pushing is how my friends and I interact. It's well known
And if
one person is touchy and ill-at-ease, then they had better be adding something truly grand to the social environment, or else the problem is theirs and theirs alone.
You want to run with the boys? Fine, run with them.
Don't complain that they forgot to wear their skirts and thei drink tea without their pinkies out
