What languages can you read?

What languages (other than English) can you at least read?

back when i could actually read German (haven't had a chance to use it in years), i found that i could also get along fairly well in reading Dutch too. it just looked like badly-spelled German or English. (no offense to all our wonderful Dutch ENWorlders, of course!)

Ashwyn, by "read", it was pretty obvious I wasn't meaning "move your gaze over words without even getting the general context of the sentence they're in".

Kwaheri.

good-bye in Swahili.

yes, you do pick up a word or two from other languages........

i can also say hello and goodbye in Korean, japanese, mandarin, etc...

and the most important phrase:

Karibu....so i can hit you with hong's schtick. ;)

I'm surprised spanish is doing so (relatively) poor in this thread. Isn't Spanish by far the most popular foreign langauge studied in the US, where about 75-80% of EN Worlders are from?

I'm also impressed at the good score French and German get.
Yes, with German actually outpacing French. That's surprising.

Of course, we only have 37 votes as of this post, so it's probably wise not to read too much into this poll.

BTW, since I studied French myself in school I probably shouldn't be the one to be surprised how well French is doing here.

I'm glad Russian's got 4 votes so far.

Hey, there are a lot of Americans (like me) who have pretty strong German roots. I took Spanish in high school because it was offered. I took German in college to figure out my relatives. :)

Besides that, I actually like the general sound of German. Can't say the same thing about French, but a lot of people view it as romantic.
