What setting(s) are we aiming for?

If I understand it right, the 4e initial books are meant to discuss uh, places, themes, planes, races, classes in all settings.

Such as - Feywild, Shadowfell, Eldarin, and Dragonborn.

All of these places/races are suppose to exist in any realm you make basically? Well I realize they are not forcing it down your throat - I am just saying they aimed to make the books both setting specific (exists in all settings in theory) as well as not say "these books are forgotten realms".

Is that what everyone else gets from the preview materials thus far?

Is Keep on the Shadowfell Forgotten Realms? Is it Ebberron? Is it both by this thinking?

THanks for the help, im trying to get myself caught up on what the world actually is.

Well the corebooks are set in a semi-built PoL (Points of Light) World. However they are developing it, so that it is loose, ie: no world maps, etc. So you can put in and take out whatever you wish. There are things from other campaign settings in PoL, such as Temple of Elemental Evil.

As for KoTS, it is supposed to be able to run in any ordinary fantasy setting (though more PoL), there will also be articles for adapting KoTS for FR and Eberron.

KotS is set in the default "Points of Light" setting. Supposedly WotC will be releasing online (DDI?) content that will show you how to adapt KotS to either Forgotten Realms or Eberron.

EDIT: Looks like I should have refreshed before posting! ;_;

The WARHAMMER world should work really well for this stuff. The chaos easily relates to Tieflings and the points of light is actually very relevant there. ..its nice because all this stuff is online ;)

It's in whatever generic-ish, D&D-like world you want it to be. It could be in Forgotten Realms or Eberron, or on Krynn or Oerth. Pick whichever one you want. Or leave it undefined and just play in "a point of light within a larger world ... a world the PCs don't know anything about until they go explore it and find out."

So - will there actually be at some points a "Points of Light Settings Book" - or is the whole concept of saying Points of Light - here is one tiny point of light anywhere you decide to put it?

So no real "realm book" per se?

I think i remember reading that Forgotten Realms Sourcebook will be the first out of the gate, which works for me because I always like FR but over the past decade I kind of grew tired of how high magic it was - I migrated to lower magic worlds because they kept the game more balanced and "in-check" I felt.

Ok - so lets say FR is the first book out of the game - does everything from the Core rulebooks have a place in FR? I dont mean could I make up the rules myself - I mean will they, or have they said, if they will create the reason the new races exists probably as a big point.

I will probably run KoTS in a few weeks - wondering what I need to tell my guys as far as "where" this is at. I dont like making homebrew worlds - not worth the effort - I have played FR, Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Midnight, Ebberon, and Monte Cooks Arcane Unerthed or whatever series.

Do any of them more appropriately fit everything that is in the Core books you think?

I doubt it. In the Worlds and Monsters preview book it says that the designers considered and specifically rejected building a full default setting in favor of the points of light concept.

I seem to recall that the DMG will have a fully-fleshed out city ready for use in campaigns, complete with everything needed. In a sense, that's the first Point that WotC wanted to add to the campaign. Of course it's up to the DM to use it or not.

To elaborate on what others have said, Points of Light was sort of designed for any world. (In particular, it adapts easiest to homebrew worlds and others that may not have as filled-in a backstory as published settings like FR or Eberron.) Instead of a world map with all the cities, towns, and dungeons clearly labeled, PoL is supposed to be just a series of connected elements (adventure sites, organizations, towns, villains, and so on) that are loose enough to fit, all together, into whatever world you plan on using.
By way of analogy, using Greyhawk as an example: Where Greyhawk might have given you a map, Points of Light gives you a transparent overlay.
Can PoL be used in worlds like Eberron or FR? Yes, but it may take a bit of homework, and the result may not really look like "points of light" (or alternatively, Eberron or FR).

What setting would I recommend using with Points of Light? Something generic would be simplest. You may find that starting with a blank slate and only filling in details as PoL takes you there easiest.

I have created my own world. A difficult task as there is still a lot to be learned from the PHB. I have created a Pantheon but still i have no clue as to what different deities have of influence on the cleric and the paladin. But i've tried to make it open and so i am keeping a close eye on any tidbit of information i can get from these previews, to lessen the time i'll have to re-create stuff as i get the books - i really want to play as soon as it is possible. My oh my am i still excited?!

I need information on how god's and clerics interact rulewise. So if anybody can come up with the slightest bit of information on that i'd be happy. :)
