What to do with a drow

Hey CRGreathouse - excellent ideas. Almost sorry I did not give your post a look before I started him. This is how I made him already. I used the exact ability scores that you assigned :).

I decided however to go with Rogue2/Wizard1 and shoot for the Arcane Trickster with 3 levels of rogue, 5 levels of wizard, 1 level in assassin, and the rest in AT. I appreciate all of the suggestions.

Thanks for everyone's feedback.

btw - to let you know how things fared for our friend the drow assassin mage (his official title from now on :)) I will let you know what happened his first session.

So at the urge of a band of hook horrors that are chasing him, he slips through a crack in the wall just large enough for him and finds himself in another array of caverns. Hearing them behind him he sneaks off into one of the passages. He chooses a narrow passage, and the first thing he sees is a decapitated umberhulk body. Deciding better than going this route, he goes down the other passage and sees a living umberhalk staring in his general direction and approaching him. As a player I am thinking, well that was fun. Rizzen (that's the drow's name) hear a collapse from the direction he originally came so now he figures he is probably trapped here. Deciding that maybe whatever killed the umberhulk might be distracted with another one he moves back into the room with the dead umberhulk body. He quietly sneaks past that cavern into another one. As he approaches he can make out two large humanoids obviously arguing. Then he horrifyingly sees one rip out a section of the other and eat it. The other one does the same. Then the two strangely separate. One goes to lie down on a bed made out of mushroom and fungus, while the other apparently keeps watch. After a few hours of this they change. Rizzen deciding that he definitely does not want to alert these two to his presence, heads back after a long period of time. As he goes back he catches sight of the umberhulk's back heading back down the passage from where it orginally came. He makes his way back in the direction of the collapse. He notices that the crack he squeezed through and the surrounding area is completely filled with rock. He leaves all of these places behind and eventually comes to a fork. He sees some strange machine probably of dwarven make raised and connected to a rail track suspended from the ceiling. Climbing the ladder to the track he walks along it for a while until he catches sight of a room that almost sparkles with gems and coins.

------$$$$$$----------$$$$$$
-----$$$$$$$$------$$$$$$$$
------$$$$$$$-------$$$$$$$
------\---------------------------/
-------\-------------------------/
--------\-----------------------/
---------\---~-----------~---/
----------\--mm------mm--/
-----------\---\HHHHH/---/
------------\---------------/

Obviously something collected these things though. And something intelligent. Squatting on the track, he waited. After a few hours a dragon stuck its head out from around the bend. I am just thinking: damn, umberhulks, trolls, DRAGONS! - my DM really is insane. Anyway, I have him wait as the dragon sort of makes some obvious sniffing noises.

Dragon: "Hmmmmm. (too himself) A delicacy is it? Is that elf I smell?"

Rizzen: "Is that dragon I see?"

Dragon: "So do you want to come down here or do you want me to come get you...for dinner?"

Rizzen: "(chuckles softly) What are you called?"

Dragon: "I have many names. You may call me Vranthis."

Rizzen: "My name is Rizzen of house Seerear."

Dragon: "So are you going to come down, or do you want a ride?"

Rizzen climbs down and proceeds to have a conversation with the dragon in the creature's lair. The first thing he says as I enter is "Look but don't touch". I found this so funny, I just burst out lauging. I had Rizzen have a similar reaction and respond with a simple look that said do you think I am stupid. The dragon apparently had been regularly receiving messages and the communication had stopped recently. He figured I was probably here hunting down some other drow and probably had been with a raiding party. DUh. Rizzen suggested that he might be able to find out what had happened if Vranthis did not eat him. The conversation was filled with a lot of sarcasm, banter, and wit. The dragon apparently took a liking to my character and we left on extremely good terms. I am hoping that Rizzen may have developed a future ally.

He climbed the rope and got back onto the track and walked on it until it met solid ground. He proceeded to continue in the same direction until he signs of small skirmishes and a few larger battles. Catching sight of the main group (that he is supposed to semi-join) who was sleeping. He put the obvious together. Deciding that the dragon could be a very good ally, he immediately made his way back to the Vranthis's lair and reported why the communication had stopped. He learned that the dragon originally came here because it was trying to beat whatever had bested the dwarves who used to control the place. Failing, he instead went to work for them. Finding that Vranthis harbored no real allegiance to whatever controlled the area really helped seal Rizzen's idea of allying with this creature. He said he would find out more information on what was going on and report back with new information within the week.

He went back towards the sleeping adventurers to find them awake and a few hundred feet beyond their original position locked in combat with some large muscular furry creatures - dire apes and a silverback. He arrived on scene just as Strider took a fatal blow.

Just a few quick thoughts.

Why is he using a Light Crossbow instead of a Shortbow or Composite Shortbow? You are proficient with the Shortbows as a Rogue, and they don't require a move-equivalent action to reload.

Also, I see that you switched out the Cloak and Boots of Elvenkind for a Greater Piwafwi. Any particular reason why you did this? IMHO, a +10 to Move Silently (from the Boots) is much better than the ability to negate 5 points of fire damage per round. Plus, the Boots and Cloak together would have been cheaper than the Piwafwi alone...

Heh. A 3rd level Drow making friends with a Dragon. You sure are lucky that he didn't eat you... :D What color dragon was it?

Orco - first read the rest of the thread to see what I did choose.

Although the Forsaker with a drow, ability wise, would absolutely rock, roleplaying wise, I don't think it would make much sense. A forsaker has an idealogical belief that magic is wrong and that all magical items need to be destroyed. Despite trying to kill a wizard and a cleric, and the boon that such a high SR would offer, I doubt the character would adopt the belief that all magic is evil, even if he ever did come up with a reason to dislike it.

What's so exceptonal about SR at this level?

Nothing until he gets his 7th class level. Then he will have an SR over 30.

But since he wants a rogue I would suggest going for the Psi-Warrior/Rogue idea.

SR 18 (drow) + 11 (forsaker)= SR 29

Ok so it is not until the 8th class level until he gets over a 30 SR.

At character level 18 he would have a SR 49.

Forsakers SR stacks with a drows. MoW pg 58
