What was CAR WARS?

What about the ultimate in Car Wars munchkinism: Helicopters and Semi- Trucks!
:D
Oh yeah, the gasoline engine supplemental rules and surplus tank armor, too!

CAR WARS... mmmmm

Havn't had time to read through all the posts.. just gotta say I loved and still love Car Wars..

The orig was a "minatures" game at first with little cardboard counters... then there was a card game, and now its been re-released bit simplified to the expansive rules that built up over the years...

And don't forget GURPS AUTODUEL too the RPG set in the Car Wars Universe .... loved that game too..

And of course Car Wars expanded to Boat Wars, Tanks Wars, Aeroduel even rules for Cycle Wars in an old ADQ, not Motorbikes which were in the orig rules... I seem to remember a rules set for Space type battles too.......

erm.. to summerise... I love Car Wars...

:)

Did anyone ever use the optional magic rules they published in the Space Gamer magazine? While I never saw the original article, I have the issue with the spell contest results, and I thought the winning entry was wonderfully elegant and cool. I believe it was called "Tornado," and the effect was determined by holding your counter down with one hand while striking the playing surface as hard as you could (or thought advisable) with the other.

I have that issue somewhere. Want me to try and dig it out, copy it and mail it to you?

And there was also Autoduel Champions that introduced superhero rules into the Car Wars universe, and autoduel rules to the Champions game. Plus it had some amazing counters scaled for Champions use... I still use them.

I appreciate the offer, and while it's tempting, my prospects of getting much use out of it aren't high enough for me to put you through the trouble. Thank you for offering, though.

My two favorite Car Wars experiences:

1) I attended a little con at the University of Michigan (BurCon, I believe), and they ran an event called Bus Wars. Everyone got about an hour to build a university bus stocked to the gills with weaponry, and then we played a huge demolition derby in the North Campus area. The U was erecting a hideous new bell tower on North Campus at that time (it did and still does look like a giant...nevermind), and I remember bonus points were available for anyone who took it out. Great game. :)

2) I played a large game at home once that involved two teams (two or three people each) -- both of which independently picked the same basic strategy. The strategy was to buy a large number of really crappy cars with ram attachments and stuff them with impact-detonated high explosives -- no armor, of course. ;) We played cat and mouse for awhile, all getting the feeling that we had hit on the same tactic...until someone decided to just go for broke, and rammed another car. It took about ten minutes to work it out, but the resulting explosion destroyed nearly every car on the map, along with most of the buildings. Sublime. :D

I think the best part of Car Wars overall is the vehicle construction. Much like BattleTech, designing units is really my favorite aspect of the game -- closely followed by seeing how my designs do on the battlefield, of course. :)

Edit: I almost forgot my favorite piece of Car Wars minutia, from Murphy's Rules: all Car Wars characters have 3 hit points, and taking 2 points of damage knocks them out; a .357 magnum does 2 points of damage -- which means a character can't commit suicide using one. ;)

Man one of the classic games. Makes me nostalgic. Ah Cyclops my laser mounted caltrop dropping trike. You kicked ass.

The rules weren't so easy though, but great game. Someone should do one for consoles or the PC. Online Car Wars. I'm there!

Many moons ago I was in a league in Newcastle over here in the UK, we had 2 leagues with about 10 people in each, great gaming...

The most bizare desing for a car at the time had to go to the car with only 3 wheels, it was meant to have 4, it rolled onto the arean and stopped next to the wall with the biggest missile weapon he could get strapped to the roof. The thing being no one would go near him in fear of what he had in that bad boy on the roof...

There used to be a few onlinr turn based car wars games going, very slow but fed the addiction a little... ;)
If anyone still knows of where I can find these drop me a line... High Velocity seems to ring a bell for one of them......
