D&D 5E What would be a fun 2 pc group?

Me and my brother in law are talking about starting up a small campaign with just the two of use to run on family get togethers and stuff. We will both run a character and probably take turns DMing every couple of levels. We are considering making a 3rd character for one of us to run two at once, but idk

So what we have agreed on already, we're both going to be Goliaths. We're going to use an array that will allow a 16 in our main stat, but nothing overpowered. Maybe something like 16, 15, 13, 12, 10, 9. We will probably start around level 5, and normally with us we will start with a free feat, but it will be completely random. This is a fun thing to do btw

Now as far as a 2 man group goes, I kinda figured that one of us would be a Charismatic character, and one of us would be a Wise character to cover the basics of perception and socializing. I was also thinking that stealth would be a bit more important than normal so we were probably going to rule out heavy armor.

Our first thought was Paladin and Cleric, but I don't want us to be too good at everything. Second thought was maybe Bard and Ranger, or even a Rogue. We don't want to be too squishy so Wizard and Sorcerer are probably out, but not necessarily. Just being a Goliath alone adds quite a bit of toughness.

So any thoughts? What would be a good but not too good 2 man group? Is there anything that I am overlooking that would be important?

I found that no matter what you choose, the party is going to be so small that the story will shape itself the party fo a much greater degree than it would with a large group.

So, like a rogue in the party will make the whole thing extra roguish, and if you toss in a druid it will be like playing Thieves in the Wild pretty much no matter what.

I'd say this means there can be no wrong choice.

I think no wrong choice here, but I would go with a classic Fighter-type and Rogue-type combo. Like Fafryd and the Grey Mouser, or Hadrian Blackwater and Royce Melborn.

The Adventurers of Bear and Owl. (A druid and a werebear barbarian)

I thought about an overly serious Monk and an overly Bardy Bard lol

Also, we are thinking we'll both be lawful good. I usually try to steer clear of LG characters so it would be a change of pace.

A Bard and a (properly-built) Rogue could be rock stars on tour.

A Paladin and a Cleric could be missionaries of their deity.

A stealthy Scout type can be built from any of several classes. Pair up with a "Police officer" - who could be a squishy spellcaster because he bears the Armor of Authority, which causes SMART crooks &c to avoid crossing him in public.

Han Solo and Chewbacca - two different-multiclassed Rogues.

Go old school. I mean really old as in Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser with a fighter/rogue combination.

If you haven't read any Fritz Lieber, you should simply hang your head in shame.

Almost any dynamic works pretty well.

I think I'd stick them with a stubborn and strong willed princess and their job would be returning her to her kingdom that was far far away. Constant threat of soldiers catching the party and possibly chasing them into hazards unknown. I think it could be pretty epic and almost every skill set could come in just as handy.

I wouldn't start them having to rescue the princess. I would start them having her already with them and fleeing toward her kingdom.

At this point it would be whatever characters they want to play. Just make healing potions fairly easily to obtain if they don't bring a healer.

I am currently using the escort the stubborn princess to her far away kingdom in a different campaign as we speak lol

She's a 22 Charisma Half-Elf teenage Bard if you were wondering hahaha! She had a pet cat they may be her pet, may be her familiar, or may be her high level Druid Grandmother looking after her.... who knows lol

I'm leaning towards Ranger + Bard right now. I think my brother in law still wants to go Pally and Cleric. I'd just have to amp up the difficulty, but it'd be fine. I still think despite being Goliaths, it'd be best to have two Dex characters. Won't dump Str or anything just focus more on Dex.
