D&D (2024) What's not going to cost discipline points for the Monk to do now?

So they certainly identified too much things costing points to do for a Monk as one of it's problems, including things that might have double costs of discipline points and per long rest uses. So with the second pass of the Monk, what do you think will be free for a Monk to do?

I think it Patient Defense might be free in that it's a reaction that doesn't cost points, it might address some of the concerns about AC and HP. I guess it could be Step of the Wind too, but maybe not necessarily all of the 3 basic uses of discipline points.

I think it would be cool if like Sorcery Incarnate, you have a limited pool resource that you can activate several times a day, only provide several options and flavor it as stances, each of which reduces a specific Di point cost. You can still use Di points in our out of the stance to activate the other abilities, but the one you choose causes the Di point cost to be 0 while the stance is active.

Dragon - 1 minute 0 cost FoB
Cheeta - 1 minute 0 cost SotW
Bear - 1 minute 0 cost PD

I'm partial to the idea that you get 1 point at the start of each turn, up to your level. May need to adjust a few things up to compensate.

But assuming that doesn't happen.

Basic actions: (0 points) bonus action
Disengage
Dash
Punch
Disadvantage on the next attack against you, or advantage on the next save. Whichever comes first.

1 point
Any 2 of the above. You can select punch twice.
Dodge

2 points (level 5)
Stunning Stike

3 points (level 11)
Gain an extra action.

5 points (level 17)
Take another turn immediately after this one. You cannot use this feature on that addional turn.

Personally I think Patient Defense and Step of the Wind shouldn't require discipline points. They both already require a bonus action, which means the monk is already giving up their bonus action attack.

However I think they both are a bit to good to not require a resource cost. They should both have a lesser effect that doesn't require spending a discipline point as well as the current version that cost 1 discipline point. Step of the wind can let use dash or disengage for a bonus action, and Patient Defense could possible give out disadvantage on the fist attack against you this round or possibly just disadvantage on melee attack against you, I am not sure which would be better.

This would also provide a new symmetry with Flurry of Blows. You get a basic version for just a bonus action, and an improved version for 1 discipline point.

Ooooh... What if... You have a maximum number of Discipline Points equal to your Wisdom modifier (min. 1), or your PB, or both (depending on the cost ratio they go with). At the beginning of your turn, if you have not spent a Discipline Point since the beginning of your last turn, you gain 1 Disclipline Point (up to your max).

This means you can alpha strike for a couple rounds if you want, and occasionally slow down to regenerate more Di points throughout the fight. Alternating rounds to earn Di points and spend Di points. Thematically, this could look like you using your non-Discipline "katas" in combat to build your Discipline. This removes all Short and Long Rest recoveries, and a Monk will have their Di Points for every fight. It may limit what Di Points could be used for if they want them to be able to do non-combat or healing stuff. They would have to make sure that the spamming wouldn't get out of hand.

No. That would not work at all. The monk needs to be able to do monk stuff every round or they suck. That version of the monk would be much worse than the current version, and the current version is awful.

Imagine telling the barbarian that they have to take a round off rage, a fighter that they need to rest up by doing one less attack every other round, a spellcaster that they need to recharge and can't cast for a round, a rogue that they can't sneak attack two rounds in a row, etc.

If it were PB + Wis mod, it would be better for low level characters, and it would work for EVERY fight, as it wouldn't rely on Long or Short rests.
  • L1-4: PB (+2) + Wis mod (+3) = 5 Di points per fight, but can recharge to earn more throughout the fight.
  • L5-8: PB (+3) + Wis mod (+4) = 7 Di points per fight + recharge
  • L9-12: PB (+4) + Wis mod (+5) = 9 Di points per fight + recharge
  • L13-16: PB (+5) + Wis mod (+5) = 10 Di points per fight + recharge
  • L17-20: PB (+6) + Wis mod (+5) = 11 Di points per fight + recharge
Many fights you wouldn't even use all your Di points. But you'd be encouraged to, rather than be afraid of running out for future fights.

In fact, you are encouraged to go hard and fast to use more Di points per fight due to recharge. Sounds like you get more per fight, and more per day overall, but it is not unlimited for longer fights.
