Whats your D&Dism?

Old D&D editions work in one of three scenarios:
* An experienced DM who can hold it all together despite all the little nooks and crannies
* Everyone is just in for some lighthearted fun
* You're in it for the nostalgia

If you're looking for something that is accessible, quick to learn, fast to play, internally consistent, balanced and flexible to accomodate a broad range of styles... Not so much

Funny, my group shows up for the game every week, and we all prefer 1e over any edition. And 4 of them are younguns who'd never played anything pre 3e before. How can they be nostalgic for something they never new existed? The nostalgic card is overplayed. Some of us like OD&D because it's a damn good game.
 

First, I apologize for this completely off-topic comment. However, have you ever heard of a website called Kedanya? 'Cause back in the day, there was someone there who had a similar handle and was from Germany. So I just thought I'd check.

Hit points, saving throws, and armor class are all D&Disms.
Oh. Saving throws. How did I miss those?

Here's the question, though: Can you turn saves into stat rolls and still have them be saving throws?

My answer: I think both the 1e/2e saves and the 3e saves were the same basic animal, so that's a start. Going a bit academic, you can use the commutative property of addition to change (die roll + save bonus + stat bonus - target number = success) into (die roll + stat bonus + save bonus - target number = success), so I think I'm okay with it. 4e defenses also fit the bill, if you flip the die roll and target number around a bit.

I would not consider the 4e saves to be of the same lineage, and really wish they'd chosen a different name. I do kinda like the mechanic, though I wish it wasn't quite as flat.
 





So what does everyone else think is a necessary D&Dism?

My D&Dism is a combination of several things…

Using a D20, playing a fantasy based RPG with some good friends having a blast, and encountering honest to goodness classic D&D style monsters (beholders, mind flayers, drow, etc.) … and that’s about it. The rest of the rules are not sacred to me at all. As long as those three things are covered, I prefer to have a realistic feeling system as possible….guess that’s why I’ve been using house rules for 30 years…lol

My D&Disms are:

* easy to find a group
* not too rules-heavy, should be accessible to casual players
* capable of running a fantasy game
