Where do you think up your best ideas?

Okay to carry this thread in a slightly different direction here, how do you keep track of your ideas if they come to you in an odd spot? Carry a notebook, tape recorder, etc.?

I personally carry a little notebook when I can. I then promptly lose them and find them a year or two down the line and go, "Looky looky I wonder what the heck this scribble means?" :)

I keep thinking about it until I get into work... then I email it to myself.

The general way of things looks to be while showering and a couple walkers. Anyone out there think of ideas while busy doing things or is it usually a clear mind type of thing?

Well, if you want to get a little off-course... I actually think up most of my ideas based on other ideas, so to speak. So I get a lot of ideas while chatting with friends, or reading books, or just surfing the web, or what have you. I'll be reading along, then suddenly my brain will twist whatever tidbit I'm reading into some idea tangenitally related to it.

As for writing stuff down, unless I'm at my computer at the time I just try to keep it in mind until I get home. Since I'm usually spending the whole interim time going, "Yeah, this is a neat idea!" and mentally fleshing it out, this usually isn't that hard. :D

Usually a half hour after watching a movie/television or reading a book. By that point I'm disecting the story and looking at the individual ideas presented.

Like after going to see the recent TMNT movie, thinking it was cool how the antagonist was like a paladin trying to redeem himself and it would make a good adventure! :) That and the cool monsters!

Lying in bed trying to sleep. I have chronic sleep issues, and after years I've found the best way to get to sleep is not to put a problem out of my mind, but to work it out, even if only a small part of it.

It's also my new secret weapon for Ceramic DM.

Nearly anywhere, at anytime. Which is really obnoxious when I'm otherwise occupied and can't drop what I'm doing. For me, it also depends upon what I'm trying to create. Songs for instance usually come out the blue (parodies) when I hear a hook and it kind of writes its self or when I have an emotion really smack me I write original lyrics.
For example, I had a particullarly crappy incident happen and wrote a song loosely based on said incident in 5 minutes. Very Depeche Mode with definte overtones of Lizzy Borden and Alice Cooper (i.e. it ends in death)

But as for storyline for my campaign, it can happen as stated, anytime, anywhere.

1) When I'm driving,
2) When I'm pacing around my apartment talking to myself / bantering IC dialogue for a story and feeling out what I want to say on paper
3) Monday mornings at 3am slicing up a human liver ;) (Much more prosaic than it sounds...)

Anywhere. I tend to think of my mind as a pot of idea-soup with things constantly being thrown in, and bits of ideas floating up every now and then.
