Kobolds through the editions vs. average fighter types or magic missile.

BECMI:
1/2 HD (2.5hp), average character needs a '12' to hit and does 3.5 damage (Magic Missile 4.5), hits a level 1 fighter (chain and shield) with a '15' for 1d4 (2.5) or 1d6-1 (2.5) damage. Character HD are 1d4/1d6 and 1d8 with a max +3 Con.

AD&D:
1/2 HD (2.5hp), average character needs a '13' to hit and does 4.5 damage (Magic Missile 3.5), hits a level 1 fighter (splint and shield) with a '18' for 1d4 (2.5) or 1d6 (3.5) damage. Character HD are 1d4/1d6/1d8/1d10/2d8 and 1d12 with a +2 max Con for non-fighters and +4 for fighters.

2nd AD&D:
1/2 HD (2.5hp), average character needs a '13' to hit and does 4.5 damage (Magic Missile 3.5), hits a level 1 fighter (splint and shield) with a '17' for 1d4 (2.5) or 1d6 (3.5) damage. Character HD are 1d4/1d6/1d8/1d10/2d8 and 1d12 with a +2 max Con for non-fighters and +4 for fighters.

3.5 D&D:
1 HD (4hp), average character needs a '15' to hit and does 6.5 damage (Magic Missile 3.5), hits a level 1 fighter (scale, heavy shield, +1 Dex) with a '16' for 1d6-1 (2.5). Character HD are 1d4/1d6/1d8/1d10 and 1d12 with a +5 max Con for some races and +4 for other races.

4e D&D (Monster Vault):
Level 1 creature with 29hp, average character needs a '8' to hit and does 8.5 damage (Magic Missile 6), hits a level 1 fighter (plate and heavy shield) with a '14' for 1d6+3 (6.5) with a power to add 6. Character HP are Con + 10/12/15. Con ranges 8-20.
4e, but not the tunneler.

The best kobold for me is the 4e kobold minion, This way you can have a swarm of the buggers threatening the PCs right out of the gate.

Plus, traps!

For me, the best Kobold is a short blue non-bearded dwarf-like creature. They're where the names for the metal and color come from. Lizards my aunt Petunia!

The poll also left out Tucker's Kobolds...

That may have been a fatal oversight jodyjohnson. One only overlooks Tucker's Kobolds to their own regret.

;)

I dunno about stats, but the iconic kobold illustrations are the ones in the AD&D 1e books. I reject all other interpretations. :)

Tucker's Kobolds or Baldur's Gate crpg type.
Endless hordes of scaly dogmen pouring out of tunnels, individually not a threat, but like zombies, the relentless waves of them are what destroy you.

I like my kobolds as the dragonkobolds of 3E and 4E, if I want to have any kobolds at all. :)

But I feel the 3E and 4E kobolds (minions) are too hard to hit for 1st level characters and doing too much damage. Yeah, I know they aren't that hard to hit at all, but at 1st level I want my small beginner monsters to get hit like 75% of the time. And if the characters hit them, I want the kobolds to go down in 1-2 hits (mostly 1 hit).

3E kobolds had some pretty nasty crossbow damage for 1st level characters if you swarm your party with 6-8 of those little buggers. Again, at 1st level I want my beginner monsters to do more like 1-4/1-6 damage instead of 1-8. One crossbow shot can bring down a level 1 wizard afterall with one hit.

So I want the flavor of 3E/4E but with statistics and balance of 1E/2E.

Man, why am I the only one answering the OPs question? :)
